Annotated Bibliography - This assessment task requires you to produce an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is a good way of getting started with your essay. It assists you to identify useful sources, and encourages you to think about how those sources might serve your essay's argument. 
You will need to:

1. Identify an essay topic.

2. Research the general area around that topic, and begin to identify what the critical questions/issues are. (See General Guidelines for Writing Essays, in this Unit Manual, and especially Step 2.)

3. Read articles, book reviews, and books. Articles should be from peer-reviewed scholarly journals.

4. Remember that all of the sources must help you to build an argument on your essay, so choose the most relevant and important sources. As a guide, you should engage with a maximum of 4 sources.

5. Cite each source, using the Chicago Manual of Style. 6. Provide, under each source: i. 1-2 sentences that summarise the main argument of the source. What is the author trying to convince you of?

ii. 2-3 sentences that comment on the methodology that the author uses. How does the author make their argument? How does this methodology serve (or not serve) their argument?

iii. 4-5 sentences that evaluate the argument. How convincing is the argument being made? What are its strengths? What are its weaknesses? How might it have been improved?

iv. 4-5 sentences that identify how the source is useful or not useful for your essay. What did you learn about your topic from this source? How did it extend or change your own thinking? If the source proved useful, how might you use this source in the development of your own argument. If the source proved less useful than you had hoped, then how did it help you to hone your own argument, and to identify better sources?

7. Formulate a provisional thesis for your essay. 8. Comment on the methodology you employed as you went about this assignment, and note at least two key learnings about your own research skills.
