Method: Many studies using different qualitative and quantitative methods explored and
examined nurses’ experiences, feelings, and attitudes while at work especially during traumatic
events . My method was literature search on 5 articles from accredited authors and websites.
Data collecting techniques and methods of research were different in each article. Datas
collected were presented in chart, table and graph forms. Participants were all ED nurses but
authors chose various ways collect the information.

Many people don’t realize the role of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the medical field.
It’s estimated that one in ten emergency workers have some form of PTSD, which is much
higher than the PTSD rate in the general population.
Nurses in the emergency department especially are my focus point. They face work-related
stress in the ED. Numerous studies and researches have been conducted on the role of the
stress inpatient care, and nearly all of them conclude that when nurses are stressed or anxious,
patient care drastically suffers. Not just nurses but the employer and team also has a great role
to play in the prevention/ management of this. PTSD often prevents nurses from doing their
jobs to the best of their ability, as the normal stresses of the job can produce frequent anxiety,
or even worse, panic attacks.
I have used some research and studies conducted by accreditable authors from various
organizations, who outlined some of the risk factors of PTSD in nurses, management strategies
for stress that can lead to PTSD, and how we can decrease it in the future. Understanding the
stressful situations and processing it by nursing faculty, administrators, and leaders can create
better learning opportunities and provide a more supportive practice environment for
professional nurses (Gerow et al., 2010)
