THE SETUP
1)Your research essay may encompass selections from drama, short stories, and/or poetry.  Look for something that may interest you.

2)This essay will require that you to consult outside sources in addition to the textbook.  Don’t think of the research as a burdensome requirement.  These topics require thought and time.  Your research will likely make it easier to gather your ideas and write a coherent essay.  See the research requirements on the following page.

3)Choose one of the following topics and compose a1200-1500 word essay addressing it.  

A)Choose an element of poetry (figurative language or symbolism or diction or form or something else.) and analyze how that element functions or is revealed in various poems.  You may use more than one poem in this topic but no more than three, please.  I want depth rather than breadth.

B)Write an analysis of a theme that you find in the works of two or more authors.  It is possible that in your comparison you will want to set the authors’ works side by side, comparing and contrasting and, perhaps, making some evaluation.  (Possible themes: War, Death, Age, Love, Social Inequality, Loss, Nature, Youth, Honor, Sacrifice, Freedom, Gender, etcetera . . . there are so many)

C)Read three to six works (short stories or poems) by a single author.  You will have to expand beyond the book to the internet or library for examples.  Write an analysis of a single element of that author’s work—for example, theme, setting, character, imagery, diction (word choice and sentence structure), or form.

D)Perform a line by line explication (line by line analysis) of a poem or poems of your choice.  This is NOT a paraphrase.  See chapter 44, notably pages 1824-1828 for an explanation and example of an explication.  Choose a poem(s) of not less than 20 lines. 

E)Choose an authorwhose work you enjoyed.  Researchseveral of his or her works.  Then research that author’s life.  Your essay should show how the events or circumstances of that author’s life have influenced his or her work.

F)    Pick a book or story you have read and the movie that was made of it.  Discuss how they are similar and different, and what was gained or lost.  (The Seven Year Itch is not an option if you have already written on this.)

G)Choose a film, book, or series of short stories that you enjoyed and discuss one of the following:
a.How it has deeper levels if one has a knowledge of literature, history, or the culture portrayed.
b.How a character develops and changes and what events affect that change.
c.How setting is important to the plot.
