Net-SNMP is a suite of software for using and deploying the SNMP protocol. It supports IPv4, IPv6, IPX, AAL5, UNIX domain sockets and other transports. It contains a generic client library, a suite of command line applications.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a widely used protocol for monitoring the health and welfare of network equipment (eg. routers), computer equipment and even devices like UPSs. Net-SNMP is a suite of applications used to implement SNMP v1, SNMP v2c and SNMP v3 using both IPv4 and IPv6.

The suite includes:
• Command-line applications to:
o retrieve information from an SNMP-capable device, either using single requests (snmpget, snmpgetnext), or multiple requests (snmpwalk, snmptable, snmpdelta).
o manipulate configuration information on an SNMP-capable device (snmpset).
o retrieve a fixed collection of information from an SNMP-capable device (snmpdf, snmpnetstat, snmpstatus).
o convert between numerical and textual forms of MIB OIDs, and display MIB content and structure (snmptranslate).

Objectives:

• Brows on MIB tree

• Execute the commands:

o snmpget -v 1 -c public localhost DISMAN-EVENT- MIB::sysUpTimeInstance

o snmpget -v 1 -c public localhost SNMPv2-MIB::sysName.0
o snmpget -v 1 -c public localhost IF-MIB::ifDescr.1
o snmpget -v 1 -c public localhost IF-MIB::ifType.1
o snmpget -v 1 -c public localhost IF-MIB::ifMtu.1
• What is the OID of each description based on the last Lab?

Task 3:
• Download MIB tree from http://ireasoning.com/download.shtml iresasoning MIB tree Or from the VU Collaborate

• Set address in iReasoning MIB browser as localhost,
• Select the Desc which mentioned in the previous slides
• Select the Operation as Get
• Run it! (GO)
