Solve the following word problems:
13. Avogadro’s constant is used to calculate the number of particles in a mole. A mole is a basic unit in chemistry to measure the amount of a substance. The constant is 6.0221413 x 10 23 . Write Avogadro’s constant in standard notation.
14. A car accelerates at a rate of 6 – (√4 ÷ √t)(m ÷ s 2 ) where t is the time in seconds after the car moves from rest.
15. A prospective buyer wants to know how much grain a specific silo can hold. The area of the floor of the silo is (2x + 9) 2 . The height of the silo is 10x +10 where x is measured in feet. Expand the square and multiply by the height to find the expression that shows how
much grain the silo can hold.
16. A statue is to be placed in the center of the park. The area of the base of the statue is 4x 2 + 12x +9 m 2 . Factor the area to find the lengths of the sides of the statue.
17. The area of Sandy’s yard is 25x 2 – 625 ft 2 . A patch of sod has an area of x 2 – 10x + 25 ft 2 . Divide the two areas and simplify to find how may pieces of sod Sand needs to cover her yard.
