Highlights
Competency Based Assessment
Competency based assessment is the process of gathering evidence to confirm that participants can perform required skills and knowledge. To complete a unit of competency participants are required to successfully demonstrate their skills and knowledge on all of the activities within this assessment. Rather than using a marking scale, competency based assessment uses competent or not yet competent.
You are required to successfully demonstrate competence in all of the activities in this assessment. This means that if you are unable to answer a question, your answer is deemed not satisfactory for any of the activities or you are unable to demonstrate a practical skill your assessor will work with you to identify opportunities for further learning if required and arrange re-assessment when you are ready.
In the event that you are unable to demonstrate your ability in any area of the assessment you will re-assessed. Re-assessment may include demonstrating a skill, answering questions, providing further information. All participants are given two (2) opportunities to be reassessed without further payment required. On the occasions where participants are unable to demonstrate competency after two (2) re-assessment attempts they should speak to their trainer about further opportunities to complete the unit.
The assessment requires that the candidate complete two (2) sections including:
1. Assessment Activity 1: Written Questions
2. Assessment Activity 2: Project
3. Assessment Activity 3: Practical Assessment
Written Questions
Candidates are required to read and understand the questions and respond in writing. Questions require short answers ranging between two or more sentences long.
Project
Candidates are required to read and understand the tasks provided and respond to the questions that follow. Questions can also be completed orally. You can complete these questions orally with an assessor or other support person such as supervisor or mentor to complete the questions. In the event of oral assessment, you are required to answer the question in your own words and your assessor or other support person is required to document your answers.
Practical
The practical assessment activities provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in either a simulated or workplace environment.
Notes regarding the assessment
• Please make sure that you fill in your name, sign, date and attach the assessment summary to your assessment. Indicate which activities have been attached to the assessment summary.
• In the event of a student requiring assistance with written tasks extra time will be given or they can answer orally to their assessor who will record their response.
• If the student is unable to attend the scheduled assessment class they will be rescheduled to a mutually agreed time
Feedback
Candidates will be given feedback on all assessment activities. Competency based assessment does not use a marking scale rather the candidate is deemed competent or not yet competent. Candidates deemed not yet competent are given additional opportunities to demonstrate competency.
Satisfactory demonstration of all activities is required before competency is achieved for the unit. In the event that you have not been able to successfully demonstrate competence in the unit, your assessor will discuss options for re assessment with you.
Appeals
If your assessor has deemed that you are not yet competent and you believe that you should be deemed competent, you have the right to appeal the decision. In this situation, speak with your assessor and refer to the student handbook.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a form of cheating. It is taking and using someone else’s thoughts, writings or inventions and representing them as your own. Plagiarism is a serious act and may result in a participant’s exclusion from a module or a course. When you have any doubts about including the work of other authors in your assessments, please consult with your facilitator. The following list outlines some of the activities for which a participant can be accused of plagiarism:
• Presenting any work by another individual as one’s own unintentionally
• Handing in assessments markedly similar to or copied from another student
• Presenting the work of another individual or group as their own work.
• Handing in assessments without the adequate acknowledgement of sources used, including assessments taken totally or in part from the internet.
What about Copyright?
You must be careful when using work from others. Copyright covers all work that is not your own including textbooks, newspapers, website information, music, magazines, movies etc.
You are allowed to do a certain amount of copying for research or study purposes. Generally, 10% or one chapter of a book is acceptable, where the participant is studying with or employed by an educational institution. All material taken from another source, word for word or paraphrased, must be acknowledge using an acceptable referencing system.
Assessment Activity 2 - Project
Instructions to Candidate
Candidates are required to complete the following projects. The projects are in three parts:
• Part 1 focuses on processing and managing event registrations
• Part 2 focuses on event preparing and processing on-site event registrations
• Part 3 focuses on providing support for event staging
This assessment activity involves several assessment methods including written questions, communicating with team members, accessing resources and systems and completing documents in those systems.
PART 1
• Students are required to read the scenario provided to complete this project.
• Students are required to undertake each activity, including reviewing of organisational documents, using event registration software and other recording or documentation tool and corresponding activities within the tools to be used.
• Students will be assessed on their ability to use Eventbrite in creating a registration for an event based on a scenario as well as to administer registration on-site.
• The Assessor Guide provides sample answers; however, other answers are possible and need to be considered according to the assessor’s discretion.
• Students’ answers may vary and can still be considered correct in cases where there are multiple correct answers or variations in the workplace. In these cases, the Assessor determines if the answer provided by the student is satisfactory based on his/her industry experience.
• Students are asked to attach evidence of their tasks by taking screenshots when required.
