Assignment Task

Skill Acquisition Reflection

During Practical A of Intensive 2 you will be caring for a patient, Louca, 71-year-old man who is experiencing complications of diabetes. One of the key clinical skills associated with caring for a patient with diabetes is undertaking a Blood Glucose Level (BGL). As part of this task, you will need to film yourself attending to Louca's BGL assessment.  You will be allocated some time during Practical A of Intensive 2 to practice BGL assessment. To complete the BGL assessment video you will need to attend one of the open lab sessions (please refer to the announcements for additional information).

For demonstration purposes of your video; do not deploy the lancet whilst undertaking the BGL assessment. You will need to pretend that you have lanced the skin with the appropriate materials.

The performance of the BGL assessment requires the completion of three elements:

  • Undertaking the BGL assessment demonstration
  • Filming the demonstration
  • Completing the BGL Assessment Clinical Skills Form

The purpose of the video is so that you can watch yourself completing the skill and reflect on which elements were performed well, and areas which could be improved upon.

Using Driscoll's Model of Reflection (Driscoll's Model of Reflection ) you will then need to discuss the identified weakness(es) in relation to the Registered nurse standards for practice and formulate some evidence-based strategies to overcome the identified weakness(es). In your reflection, you need to clearly explain how the proposed strategies promote positive health outcomes for the patient.

You need to write in prose for this assessment piece. The use of headings is permitted.

You will need to upload the video, the completed Clinical Skills Appraisal Form, as well as your written reflection.
