The impact of skin integrity issues is significant to the individual, the community and the healthcare system as a whole. When caring for the older person, understanding the risk factors of skin integumentary issues, wound development and healing is necessary to understand the impact of complex disease processes. This knowledge is essential for health professionals in order to provide holistic care to the older person with regard to skin integrity. Changes within organisations are challenging, hence it is important to understand how to ensure that change management strategies can be implemented successfully when there is clearly a need for change.

A clear communication/education strategy can make the difference between success and failure and needs to be included in any plan of action when trying to make any changes within a workplace. In this first part of your first assignment, you will be required to justify, in written format, a skin integumentary risk factor and justify a change in practice within a health context that draws on current evidence related to best practice and a change management strategy.

Assignment 1 has two linked parts and each will be submitted separately. You must ensure that you plan your responses to both parts of Assignment 1 early and appropriately.

This part of the assignment requires you to provide a written proposal to justify the implementation of an evidence-based practice change with regard to a risk factor for a skin integrity issue. The change in practice that you are proposing must draw on current evidence related to best practice and a change management strategy.

While Part B will require you to develop an education seminar for your workplace to raise awareness of this risk factor, it is expected that you will use industry-appropriate language to disseminate your Part A findings and that you will include a communication format that is appropriate for an educational resource.

In developing your proposal, you are required to:

• Identify a specific risk factor associated with a skin integrity issue and propose a practice change that promotes the prevention of the specific risk factor and potentially reduces the incidence of the skin concern.
• Consider the psychosocial impact on a person, specific to a care setting (i.e. residential aged care, community, acute care), and the role of a range of health professionals along with a strategy to change practice. You should include considerations in relation to the psychosocial impact of the intervention, the intended care setting and the role of the health professional along with how they might change practice. 

In your discussion, you should:

• critically analyse the skin integrity issue in relation to a specific area of health
• explore and analyse the impact of a risk factor in relation to this skin integrity issue
• consider and discuss an appropriate change management strategy.

Your proposal requires an introduction and conclusion, and the body should address the justification for the risk factor, as well as the reason for change in practice, along with potential benefits.
