This assignment consists of two parts, A and B. Both parts must be completed.  

This assignment must be submitted through CloudDeakin by 8:00pm, Friday 02 October, 2020. It  is worth 30% of your final mark.  

PART A: FORENSIC DNA STATEMENT (10%)  

This part of the assignment is based on your DNA findings from the online practicals. A guide statement  has been provided for you on the Unit Site under the Resources/Assessment/Assignment tab. This is an  excellent resource but ensure you do not plagiarise any part of it. 

In Practical 2, you performed case vetting on the crime scene scenario provided and requested item  examinations and DNA analysis for three items which you believed were the most probative pieces of  evidence submitted by the Major Crime Scene Unit. You were provided with the STR profiles for these  items of evidence, and also mtDNA and SNP profiles for two further pieces of evidence. You will need to  submit a forensic DNA statement reporting your findings for all the items for which you were provided with  a DNA profile (including STR, mtDNA and SNP profiles).  

Your statement will include the following sections:  

? Name and position  

? Qualifications: State your qualifications as they are – you do not need to make anything up.  

? Items Examined: This section relates to the chain of custody for each item – specifically, when  each item was received by the Deakin Forensic Services Department.  

? Results:  

o For all items for which STR DNA analysis was performed, you need to state any findings,  and complete a Likelihood Ratio table.  

o For the item for which mtDNA and SNP analysis were performed, you need to: 

? Complete an mtDNA table indicating which haplotype and breed the sample  originated from  

? Indicate which reference SNP profile matched the evidentiary SNP profile  

o For the item for which HIrisPlex analysis was performed, you need to state any findings  in terms of predicted phenotypic characteristics  

? Appendix: Likelihood Ratio calculations worksheets for all STR profiles, and all the proformas you  completed or were provided with for this case.  

PART B: CASE SCENARIO (20%)  

You are a researcher specialising in forensic biology and the police have approached you regarding a  case for which they require information to provide them with investigative leads. They have asked you to  consider the case scenario and provide them with a report, advising them on which items of evidence  (DNA-related only) may be probative and why, and how they should proceed with analysing any DNA  they obtain from this evidence.  

Case scenario  

The RSPCA have been investigating a possible dog fighting ring in Geelong. A public appeal for  information led to a tip from a person who had found a dead dog near the fence on the back of their  property. The dog had been shot through the head and bore many wounds and scars. They believed it  had come from the neighbouring property, from which they routinely heard dogs barking and yelping. The  neighbour denies he is running a dog fighting ring or that dog fighting has occurred on his property. A  search of the neighbouring property has revealed 9 dogs in cages. The RSPCA believe three of the live  dogs are American Pit Bull Terriers, and two are Dogo Argentinos which are banned breeds in Australia.  However, the owner claims the dogs are American Staffordshire Terriers and Mastiffs, which are not  banned. The RSPCA believe the remaining four dogs may be Staffordshire Bull Terriers which were  reported stolen from a breeder in Bacchus Marsh. The property owner denies the dogs were stolen and  claims he was given them by a breeder friend who has since relocated overseas.  

When the RSPCA attempt to remove the dogs from the property, the owner becomes aggressive and the  police are called. While at the property, the police notice a gun poking out from under a shed. The property  owner says the gun does not belong to him and he doesn’t know how it got there. Police seize the gun  and submit it to the Victoria Police Forensic Services Department (VPFSD) for DNA analysis. Forensic  biologists obtain the profile of a male but no match is made to profiles on the National Criminal  Investigation DNA Database (NCIDD). However, firearms examiners at the VPFSD have determined the  gun was used to fire the bullet which was found in the dead dog. Based on this information, the police  obtain a warrant and return to search the property further.  

During the search, the police find bloodstained clothing in a bag stored in a cupboard in the shed. Also in  the bag is a bloodstained knife wrapped in a six-month-old copy of the Herald Sun newspaper. STR DNA  profiles are obtained from the blood and touch DNA on the clothing, knife and newspaper but there is no  match to any profiles on NCIDD.  

Your report will be a maximum of 1500 words and will include the following sections:

? Evidence list and examination hierarchy: List all items that may have potential DNA evidence in  the case (excluding that for which DNA evidence has already been obtained). The items must be  listed in the order in which you would recommend they be examined, how probative each item is  in relation to the case, and an explanation justifying your reasoning. For each item, specify which testing and DNA analyses you would perform on the item and the information you aim to obtain.  You must also indicate what follow up analysis you would recommend if a technique fails to give  adequate information.
