Highlights
Task overview:
To create and write up a group program (using the format provided below). Imagine that your supervisor is me (Roberta).
You must also create either a flyer or an information sheet for participants or other agencies to accompany your proposal. Simple graphics are fine.
Assignment format:
1. Title: Come up with an appropriate name for the group
2. Email (100 Words): A brief email to your placement supervisor (Roberta). This should be written in a professional manner, and should succinctly state the purpose of the email and briefly inform your supervisor about the content of the proposal. INCLUDE THIS IN THE ASSIGNMENT - DON'T EMAIL ROBERTA!!
3. Background (400 words): Briefly, what have you observed, and why do you think a groupwork approach might be useful? This should be written in the first person. Use at least one reference (from one of the readings from the topic—or from our library) here to support your observations. THIS SECTION SHOULD INCLUDE AT LEAST 1 ACADEMIC REFERENCE TO SHOW HOW YOU ARRIVED AT THIS POINT.
4. Evidence (500 words): This is where you need to do some background research about the ‘issue’ you have chosen. You should use more than one source, where for example you might combine statistics from a reputable source [such as the ABS, a government policy paper, submissions to an inquiry, a government report etc]. Along with this evidence, draw upon some peer reviewed literature to strengthen your proposal. THIS SECTION REQUIRES AT LEAST 4 ACADEMIC REFERENCES.
5. Participants, recruiting and practicalities (200 words): Who are your participants, how will you recruit them? Outline how you would do this and provide your rationale for the choices you have made.
6. Provide a program plan (400 words): How many sessions will you have? Provide an outline plan of each session. Can your group be flexible in any way, or, does it require following rigid guidelines?
7. Risk assessment (200 words): What, if any, are any potential risks or ethical concerns that may be possible with your proposed group? In what ways could these risks be mitigated or avoided altogether?
8. Evaluation (200 words): how might you evaluate your group? You can create an evaluation sheet if you would prefer.
9. Create a Flyer (A4 page with simple graphics): Create a poster/flyer that will be used to promote your group.
Planning for assignments is important, here are the recommended steps to take.
1. Choose an area of interest for your group.
2. Narrow that down and be really specific
3. Create a name for your group
4. Provide a background to the issue
5. Include a rationale about why a group approach would be useful.
6. Identify the goal of the group
7. Who are your participants and how would you recruit them?
8. Provide an outline of the activities and purpose in each session
9. Outline the practicalities
10. Can you foresee/identify any possible risks and how might these risks be managed?
11. How might you evaluate the group?
12. Can your group be flexible in any way, or, does it require following rigid guidelines?
13. Write a 100 word email to your supervisor explaining that you have attached your idea for a group
14. Make a flyer/info-sheet for your group
Tips
If you think that your group should be open-ended, rather than one that has a clear start and finish, make sure that you clearly point that out and explain why you have chosen to run your group in this way. Yes you can use the first person if you choose to.
