Background and Context

With the worldwide outbreak of novel coronavirus infection, the world is in the situation of socio economic crisis along with psychological distress increasing rapidly at the global level. With the  Westminster form of government in Australia, the Nation has got the position among the most  successful developed States around the globe which has slowed down the spread of COVID 19 at  an efficient rate (Ritchie & Roser, 2020). Although, coping the psychological impact of this  pandemic is still to be fully addressed and resolved among the communities of the nation. The  immediate effect of the outbreak of COVID-19 has resulted in social distancing and isolation  leading to an increase in the various mental health issues which is affecting all the communities  significantly (Alradhawi, 2020). One such community which has been facing severe mental health  distress with the outbreak of this unpredictable pandemic is the community of lesbian, gay,  bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+). The COVID-19 has the potential to have a  higher risk of disease-related to respiratory systems such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome  and range illness from cold to extreme bad health (Singhal, 2020). The community of LGBTIQ+  has been generally reported to have a lower rate of self-perceived health in comparison to the  general population (Russell & Fish, 2016). The impact of mental health concerning this  community cannot be ignored as the norm of social distancing along with the anxiety about the  disease can severely affect this community. It has been evident with various reports suggesting  that the LGBTIQ+ community in Australia, as well as at international level, used to experience  depression and anxiety at higher rates than the other population and have a greater risk of self harm and suicide as well (Plöderl & Tremblay, 2015). This community is, undoubtedly, at higher risk of facing the mental health issues such as anxiety and depression than the rest of the  population (Taylor at al., 2019; Corboz et al., 2008). With such reports in hand, the concern over  the mental health of LGBTIQ+ community should be a priority for the nation. The present  research proposal is aiming to focus on the impact of COVID-19 on mental health wellbeing with  respect to a particular community of LGBTIQ+ in the nation of Australia

Literature Review

In this part of the research proposal, the reader will come across the various previous research  findings related to the exploration of the mental well-being of this community. A series of  argument will be addressed underlying the gaps of studies among the different researchers with  respect to this topic. In furtherance of the literature review, the focus will be on consideration of  the various mental health issues frequently observed with the outbreak of this pandemic among  the LGBTIQ+ community members. Various aspects and roots of mental health like intimate  partner violence, anxiety and depression, the family of origin violence, substance use and  homelessness will be discussed and analyzed with the research work of various researchers  providing an in-depth understanding of the issues in concern of the mental wellbeing of LGBTIQ+  community.

Anxiety and Depression among the members of the LGBTIQ community According to Plöder (2015), the community members of LGBTIQ+ is likely to experience higher rates of anxiety and depression in comparison to other heterosexual people and even they have  at higher risk of suicidal and self- harm tendency. The consideration of these mental health issues  among the LGBIQ+ member is relevant considering the outbreak of this pandemic.

According to Wilson and Cariola (2020), the mental health of the LGBTIQ+ community will be  optimized if they got support from school, community and family resources. The present paper  has provided qualitative research where the systematic examination of the feelings and thoughts  of the research participants have been analyzed for having a rich understanding of the issue. With  synthesis, the researchers have identified five core themes prevalent in this community which  are isolation, rejection, phobia, need for support; policy and environment; connectedness;  marginalization and depression, self-harm and suicidality. The paper has also provided that there is an urgent need of providing positive school climate where the member of this community can  feel emotionally, physically and socially safe during their adolescence and early adulthood to  avoid any sort of mental health issue among them (Wilson and Cariola, 2020). This systematic  review has also revealed that despite having an investigation into the mental health outcomes  within the LGBTQI+ community, there are still gaps existing which need to be bridged to  understand the situation of this community and address their mental health problems.

Another important study which suggests that the impact of COVID-19 can adversely affect the  mental health of this community can be deduced from this next paper. According to Barr, Budge  and Adelson (2016), the transgender community belongingness is a crucial factor in constructing  the mental health of these transgender people. With an online survey assessing the transgender  community belongingness and the strength of transgender identity and well-being, the study has  used structural equation modelling to analyse the data and concluded that the strength of the  identity of a transgender person was indirectly and positively related with the wellbeing which  can be developed with community belongingness but was not link directly with the well-being  (Barr, Budge and Adelson, 2016).

The belongingness among the members of different communities has been disrupted with the  outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic around the globe.

As per the Victorian Department of Health and Services (2019), the resource paper has provided  an insight into the mental health and wellbeing of the members of the intersex community. The  mental health of this community is also linked to the identification of unnecessary medical  intervention along with the attitude of the people which act as drivers for reducing mental health  and well-being of the members of LGBTIQ+ community more than this intersex variation itself  (Victorian Department of Health and Services, 2019). The outbreak of COVID-19 has resulted in  many medical processes and procedures involved in order to identify and prevent the spread of  this coronavirus. This can further lead to the deterioration of the mental well-being of this  particular community.

According to Jones at al. (2016), most of the commonly reported mental health problems  associated with the intersex community is found to be anxiety, depression and PTSD. It is also been found that there was 60% of participants in this research who were having the thought of  suicide and 90% of them had even attempted it concerning the issue of congenital sex variation.

The anxiety and depression have even hit hard this community with isolation and social  distancing with the people as this community usually have a handful of people of their choices  with whom they get comfort and warmth. The medical processes with respect to prevention of  COVID 19 pandemic are also threatening and affecting the mental health of this community with  horrible past experiences associated with healthcare settings.
