Subject content 

This subject consists of 12 Modules starting with foundational ideas about what community is and how it is studied, proceeding to sociological theories pertinent to the examination of communities, and progressing to finally case studies that help us to put our investigation in context. 

The key ideas in this subject are framed by several questions: what is a community and how do communities operate? How do sociologists study communities? What sociological theories help us to understand communities? What do communities look like currently, and what might they look like in the future? Are communities good for everyone? How are communities governed? How do communities change? What are catalysts for community change? Part 1 is an introduction to the notion of community from a sociological perspective, Part 2 is about the sociological theories of community, and Part 3 is about case studies that are both interesting and facilitate learning about how to apply the theory. 

While there are many theories and concepts in the sociological literature, this subject focuses on theories of government and governance, inequality (social inclusion and exclusion), communion and cohesion, social capital, social and economic development, community participation, paid and unpaid work, and social and economic change. Underpinning each of these theories or sets of theories are key sociological questions about who has power and how it operates, the nature of macro and micro social interactions, and the practice and development of individual and collective moral and ethical values.
