Essay Writing Assignment:

Task: Past research undertaken by CERF has generally been in the form of quantitative evaluations. The agency has very limited knowledge of qualitative methods in social research. There are internal concerns that qualitative research may suffer from quality issues; i.e., there is a general belief within the agency that qualitative research lacks rigour, credibility and reliability. If the agency is to implement a broad program of qualitative social research, then this perception must be challenged. You are to write an essay that critically reflects on how to ensure quality in qualitative research. The essay should:

• explore common criticisms of qualitative research in terms of maintaining quality;
• address the key principles for ensuring quality in qualitative research;
• reflect on the role of the researcher and the concepts of reflexivity and empathic neutrality; and,
• bring this together with a strong, critical reflection that challenges the pre-conceived notions of qualitative research (such as those held by some at CERF).
