Highlights
INSTRUCTIONS:
For this paper, you are asked to reflect on one of the main topics and theories/perspectives addressed throughout this course. This assignment will give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned to one of the topics and theories.
STEP ONE – TOPIC & QUESTION:
1) CULTURE:
• How important is a culture in our lives, as we transition through life stages (i.e. childhood, teen years, and adulthood)?
2) SOCIALIZATION:
• How much agency do agents of socialization have in the lives of Canadians today? Defend your answer by addressing two socialization agents.
3) GENDER:
• How do gender roles and gender ideology affect people's occupation, volunteer, and/or extracurricular choices in Canada today and what does it mean for social relations more broadly?
4) RACE/ETHNICITY:
• How can identifying with a racial or ethnic group be economically, politically, and emotionally advantageous or disadvantageous?
5) RELIGION:
• How does religion create conditions for social cohesion and/or reinforce social inequality and social conflict? Does religion have a place in the modern world?
6) SOCIAL INEQUALITY:
• How do understandings of social inequality in North America shape the way we respond to poverty and social stratification? Do you think stratification is “inevitable”? Explain.
STEP TWO – THEORY & THEORIST:
The course has explored several sociologists and sociological concepts/theories/perspectives. In addressing the topic and question you have selected, identify a theory/concept/perspective that you believe best helps us to understand the topic and answer the question. In your discussion, briefly summarize the theory/concept/perspective you have selected and apply the theory/concept/perspective to your chosen topic.
Remember that there are different (and often competing) explanations for these topics. Your goal is to persuade the reader that your chosen theory/concept/perspective provides the most complete or comprehensive explanation. This requires you to engage with the theory and apply it to the topic, not just summarize it.
Ensure that you:
1. briefly summarize the theory first
2. clearly cite the textbook this theory can be found on
3. then apply the theory to your chosen topic in order to prove your point of view is correct.
STEP THREE – EXTERNAL RESEARCH:
Research TWO external academic sources – meaning, other than the class textbook or your theorist’s written work from step two & three above. Visit the Humber library or your local library for academic non-fiction sources that are no older than the year 2000. Use these sources to research further into your topic, and to prove that your point of view is correct.
Ensure that you:
1. identify the two sources (what the source is, their title, author, year of publication, publisher, etc.).
2. summarize how these sources demonstrate your thesis and provide evidence of how they supported your research.
3. use specific information from the two sources.
