As the first major assignment for the subject, this task gets students critically reflecting about the places in which they are embedded and how the concepts introduced in in the first half of SOC297 might be ‘read’ through our urban landscape, presented through photography and commentary. 
The assignment has TWO parts:
 
1: ‘VIRTUAL STREET ETHNOGRAPHY’: You must take a ‘virtual’ fieldtrip to a multicultural neighbourhood. While Sydney is preferred, international locations are acceptable as long as they can be considered ‘migrant neighbourhoods’ or ‘migrant cities’. 

2. INDIVIDUAL ADOBE SPARK PHOTO-BLOG (PHOTOS & REFLECTION TEXT) 
2.a the Individual reflection text of 1500 words must ALSO be Submitted through Turnitin so we can track for plagiarsm. 
Task requirements in detail: 

1. VIRTUAL FIELDWORK TRIP 
• After watching the lectures in Week 3, 4 and 6 you should do some research and identify a highly multicultural suburb or locality in Sydney or an international location that you would like to focus on. You should look for somewhere that is a ‘migrant’ city or ‘migrant neighbourhood’. 

• VIRTUAL ETHNOGRAPHY: Use Google ‘Street View’ to tour around the area you are focusing on, and you can also google up photos of people, buildings, activities, shops etc in your chosen place. 
• You could zero in on the shopping street (eg in central Chinatown, or Eastwood Mall, or Blacktown, Harris Park, Auburn, Lakemba, Campsie, Cabramatta, Hurstville, Strathfield – though you are not limited to this) or it might just be a building such as Chung King Mansions in Hong Kong, Lucky Plaza or Golden Mile in Singapore. 
• Suggestions include (but are not limited to) Lakemba, Auburn, Eastwood, Cabramatta and Fairfield, Parramatta, Harris Park, Blacktown, Ashfield, Chinatown, Strathfield, Burwood. 
• Copy the images (be sure to record the source for later referencing) and/or screenshot in Google Street View that relates to the themes set out below. This could be a direct image of something like a sign, workers, or things being sold, a shop or business, or an image of people doing certain activities. You could even include an image that evokes a metaphor pertinent to these themes.
