Highlights
Select one of the criminological theories or perspectives that we studied this semester and evaluate whether it is useful for understanding a criminological problem in Victoria. As part of your evaluation, you should consider whether at least one different theory or perspective might help to address the explanatory limitations of your main theory. You must provide evidence and specific examples to support your analysis.
Social Disorganisation – Park and Burgess, Sampson, and Groves.
Introduction
Park and Burgess’ theory of ring bound social disorganisation, while now outdated, should not be discredited in its entirety. There may still be real world applications of some theories they’ve suggested.
Body
Paragraph 1
This will be an introduction to the 1925 version of the theory detailed by burgess and park at the Chicago school. It will discuss the geological nature of the rings through reference to the image and that’s application in 1925.
It introduces readers to the theory and highlights the starting point of the theory so as it changes it can be better understood why.
Will use image of the five rings for a visual understanding. (Concentric zone Model – The city, 1925)
Use Melbourne as an example of the centre, possibly with another image to improve the readers understanding of the concentric application to a city.
Paragraph 2
Will be used to highlight the issues with social disorganisation as presented by burgess and park. Looking at the reasons why the analysis made in the 1920s could have been inaccurate and its impact on its application today.
Will highlight the issues with the 1925 iteration of the theory so that the refined version can be seen as better working.
Use of the CSA website to review Melbourne’s crime spread in relation to the concentric zone model.
Paragraph 3
This paragraph will discuss what aspects of parks and burgess’ theory are still relevant in current day criminology. Specifically with focus on young offending and multiple offender crimes in young people.
It suggests that although the blanket conical view of offending may not be accurate today, the theory behind it may still be regarding certain crimes.
Key indicators of social discourse that can still be applied today.
Gives examples of overarching gang-related factors – relate this to Sampson and groves discussion of neighbourhood as an aspect of crime.
Demonstrate gang related activity through homicide rates by multiple offenders
Paragraph 4
This paragraph will delve into youth related crime in Dandenong, specifically multiple offender crimes that relate to the theory presented by sampson and groves. It will use statistics to discuss the theoretical application to both crime and delinquency in the area.
This paragraph will be the exhibiting the relationship between the theories using empirical evidence to solidify the theory.
Again, use the CSA website for information on the greater Dandenong area.
Use this graph from research document to relate crime rates in greater Dandenong to multiple offenders as suggested in prior paragraph.
Discuss the social construction of greater Dandenong through census data.
Paragraph 5
Compare this to rational choice theory to test whether gang related crime is related to rational choice more so than social disorganisation. Positives fro this include the opportunity (due to numbers) and highly benefit the offender (within peer group), to name a few. Aiding social disorganisation is the nature of peer pressure in gang crime, and neighbourhood being more influential than the choice.
Will reassert the application of social disorganisation theory by evaluating its functions next to rational choice theory.
Give a better understanding of rational choice theory and its application to crime.
Exhibit how peers and unsupervised groups function in relation to deliquincy
Conclusion
Return to the original theory, suggesting that its legacy is still useful in modern criminology, especially in relation to youth and peer crime.
