Social psychology assignment
"Interactionism in Reicher's social identity account of crowd behaviour" The social psychology assignment will require you to transfer your learning and understanding of interactionism, as discussed and practiced in lectures and workshops, to a different research area. Specifically, it is your task to identify and discuss interactionism in a theoretical account of crowd behaviour: the behaviour people show when they are in large groups, the apparent transformation of their psychology when individuals are immersed in a mass of people (e.g., gatherings, protests, or emergencies). A traditional view of crowd behaviour follows the work of Gustave LeBon who, already over a century ago, put forward a very influential analysis in his book The Crowd (1895/1947). His views have been criticized by more recent social psychologists, in particular by Steve Reicher and his collaborators, who advocate a radically different perspective on crowd behaviour. Amongst this is what they call the Elaborated Social Identity Model of crowd behaviour. Reicher and colleagues have published extensively on these issues. For the present assignment I recommend in particular three articles. One is an empirical investigation of a student protest in London in November 1988 (Reicher, 1996). This empirical study articulated for the first time ideas of the elaborated social identity model. It is particularly useful here as a more concrete illustration of the theoretical ideas. The other two articles (Drury & Reicher, 2009; Reicher, 2011) provide more in-depth theoretical discussion. Drury, J., & Reicher, S. (2009). Collective psychological empowerment as a model of social change: Researching crowds and power. Journal of Social Issues, 65, 707-725. Reicher, S. (1996). 'The battle of Westminster': developing the social identity model of crowd behaviour in order to explain the initiation and development of collective conflict. European Journal of Social Psychology, 26, 115-134. Reicher, S. (2011). Mass action and mundane reality: An argument for putting crowd analysis at the centre of the social sciences. Contemporary Social Science, 6, 433-449.
In their publications, Reicher and colleagues regularly refer critically to LeBon and his views on crowd behaviour. For this assignment it is sufficient to understand LeBon's
perspective through Reicher's writings; there is no need to read about LeBon beyond this.

Your task:
• Briefly review LeBon's perspective on crowd behaviour (as portrayed by Reicher et al.) and how it represents situationism.

• Discuss the new theoretical social identity account proposed by Reicher and colleagues

• Analyse how Reicher et al.'s account reflects interactionism, whether static or dynamic, and precisely how so.

• Briefly evaluate the different implications of the two accounts (e.g., for research, for practice)

Note: Aside from the above references, you can also consult and include more, as you see fit (e.g., about self-categorization theory or social identity theory), but that is not required. For Reicher and colleagues' writing on crowd behaviour, you do not need to constantly reference their papers, unless you want to make clear that a particular point was distinctly made in one of their papers.
