Task: Aims: This small exploratory research project examines the multi-disciplinary staff, patient and family experiences, and their perceptions in relation to the role, purpose and outcomes of family meetings in the hospital settings. The purpose of this study is to understand the views of the different parties involved in family meetings in order to generate valuable insights and knowledge regarding this important clinical intervention commonly used in hospitals. In addition, this research aims to contribute to the further development and improvement of hospital practices in relation to inpatient family meetings. Justification: The goal of this study was to explore the subjective experiences and opinions of three different groups of participants in family meetings: patients, family members and multidisciplinary staff, with a view to improving the quality and usefulness of this important hospital intervention tool. Findings from this project will be used for the development of educational materials to increase staff knowledge, skills and confidence in conducting well organised and successful family meetings in inpatient hospital settings. The research questions guiding this research were: 1) What are the experiences of patients, families and multi-disciplinary staff in relation to family meetings conducted in the hospital settings? 2) What are patient, family and staff perceptions of the role, purpose and outcomes of family meetings? 3) What suggestions for improvements do patients, family members and staff have in relation to family meetings? 4) What changes in practice could improve and promote the usefulness of family meetings in the hospital setting?
