Assignment Task

The research project asks you to Investigate an aspect of education and its social consequences and/or character.

It is worth considering the following essay structure as a guide:

Introduction

Introduce the paper and the central issue being investigated (indicate its importance or significance). Include a succinct statement about your primary source and the lens you are using to analyse it (i.e. the lens of gender, race, class, neoliberalism, social justice, etc.), and indicate your thesis statement (i.e. your main argument). 

Literature review 

A critical overview of the existing research,e. whatdo the secondary sources say about the issue you have chosen to investigate?

Description and analysis of the artefact

What does the artefact source tell us about the issue? What is clearly evident and what remains implicit? What question have you raised in relation to your artefact, and how does the academic literature help you answer it? Intertwine your findings with the current literature to build an argument.

Implications for practice

unpack links between theory and practice. For example, what does this research mean, in concrete terms, for your future practice as an educator? In this section, ensure that you incorporate a discussion of Australian Professional Standards for Teachers Focus Areas 1.3, 2.4 and 3.3 (see Rubric below). This section may also be linked to appendices if useful. 

Conclusion

Reiterate what the paper has been about, return to your key research question, highlight key findings, indicate any future research that is required, and close the conversation down.

Steps Required for the Research Project Essay

Choose a general issue. In the organising statement there is a key word: ‘social’. The project must be based on the concerns of this topic. Sociology of education and policy studies are the main fields of educational study that sustain this topic and should help define your project.

• Search for relevant secondary sources and decide on a research question (provide lots of time to craft your research question as can be harder than it sounds) 
• Collect a primary source. Steps 2 and 3 are interchangeable.
• Your research project should be presented in essay format using sub-headings . 
• Check your essay against the rubric below to ensure all key requirements have been met
