Scenario 1: Mary Castellanos

Mrs Mary Castellanos aged 70, is admitted into the Mental Health Unit at the local hospital for assessment when she took several Panadol tablets. She was found by her daughter, Judy, when she took some groceries to her mother’s home. Mary lives with her son, Mike. He moved back in to live with Mary two years ago after their father, Alexander died of a fatal heart attack. Mary became depressed after his death and did not like living on her own. They had been married 44 years. Judy has become increasingly concerned over the last year that her brother may be taking his mother’s money. Money seems to be disappearing out of her mother’s bank account and when she asks her mother about this, she is quite evasive. Mike has a history of drug problems and has been in and out of rehabilitation. When Judy confronted him, he swears he is clean. She was not keen on him moving in to live with their mother, but Judy has always worried about Mike and has always given him everything that he wanted. Mary does not want to move into residential care as she does not want to leave her marital home. Judy is unable to care for her mother as she is recently widowed following the death of her partner in an industrial accident and she is raising her three school age children on her own. As a student social worker at the Mental Health Unit, you have been asked by your social work supervisor to complete a brief psychosocial assessment with Mary.

Scenario 2: Ashur Hannouch

Ashur Hannouch is a 55-year-old Assyrian refugee who arrived in Australia 5 years ago from Turkey.

Ashur is a member of a minority Catholic group who experienced oppression in Iraq. He sought refuge in Turkey 8 years ago from where he was able to gain asylum in Australia. Ashur does not have any family in Australia, but since arriving he has developed a close network of friends in the local Assyrian community. Ashur finds it difficult to remain in contact with his family (his mother and brother), who still live in a militia-controlled area in Northern Iraq, as he does not want to place them in any further danger. As a young boy he witnessed his father dying of a massive heart attack in hospital after he had been interrogated by the police.

For the last 2 years Ashur has worked as a teacher’s aide in a local Catholic primary school that has many refugee children. He enjoys the work and feels that he has a positive influence on the children and their parents. Last week, while on a school excursion, Ashur suffered a serious heart attack and is now in a serious but stable condition in the coronary care unit in a large city hospital.

For a couple of days now, Ashur has been requesting to see the local Assyrian Catholic priest who is himself very unwell at home with the flu and cannot visit Ashur in hospital for another few days. Ashur is convinced that he is dying, even though the doctors are pleased with his progress and have told Ashur that they expect him to make a full recovery, but that he will probably need to remain in hospital for a couple of weeks. You are the social work student for the Coronary Care Unit and have been asked by your social work supervisor to meet with Ashur and a social work assessment.
