Assignment Task

This case study requires you to engage with a range of stimulus materials (recorded interview, file notes, first-person account) and use the provided framework to develop an understanding of the case and develop a plan to work with the client.

Part

1. Social Work Assessment. You need to cover all six areas in good detail.

• Introduction: Social context – locate the client within a network of personal, family and community relationships.
• Impact of the illness on the person’s life and the lives of significant others.
• Describe the person’s current level of functioning – how well are they managing in their current context?
• Stressors and strengths in the person’s current situation.
• Summary of the situation. What are the key aspects of the case that will shape your work with the client?
• Plan for the activity. Write a short plan of how you would want to work with your client.
• Note: You should not use references in this part of the assignment. The challenge here is to write the assessment as though it were a piece of professional writing.

2. Connecting the case to broader social work and mental health theory and personal values.

Outline what theories have underpinned your assessment and intervention plan, and provide a reflective account of your own reactions, including an exploration of personal values and issues to the case study

Case study

Maia a 28-year-old mother of a 1-year old son is living with her very supportive family. She has a long history of substance use, including heroin, ice, meth and prescription drugs. She has been to detox and rehab many times. She was heavily using ice until she found out she was pregnant at 12 weeks – and since then has shifted her life 180 degrees. She is on methadone, has mental health and child protection support, lives with her mother and stepfather and is also supported by the family of her son’s child. She has minimal contact with the father who is still using – one of the reasons she was referred to child protection is because of his behaviour to her while she was pregnant, and she refused to inject.

Maia is keen on working with you on her goals. Maia currently gets a single parent payment from Centrelink, but has no other income. She has had irregular casual roles in retail, but is not working. Her family are her main supports.
