A word report demonstrating the sociolinguistic analysis and interpretation of some speech data (provided) using techniques covered in the unit. Training and guidance will be provided throughout the course.

Part A

Choose one of the recordings from the selection in Recording Group A (Mr Tickle 1, Mr Tickle 2, and Mr Tickle 3)* and provide a descriptive analysis of the variation you hear. Your analysis will likely follow these steps:

1. Transcribe the recording (exactly what was said).

2. Identify suitable linguistic variables for further investigation, based on what you have learned on the unit.

3. Identify any linguistic constraints which might be affecting the realisation of the variables.

4. Quantitatively analyse and describe the variation.

5. Present your findings using text, tables and charts where appropriate.

There are three recordings to choose from, but you only need to analyse one of these. It is up to you to identify suitable linguistic variables to focus on, but this should be guided by looking at the variables we cover in class.

Instead of using one of these recordings, you are free to source your own recording if you prefer. The recording should be mins long and include only one speaker. If you do decide to use your own recording you must get approval from Rob first to make sure it is suitable.

There is no set number of variables you should look at—it all depends on how much you have to say about them (bearing in mind the word limit). It might be an idea to start with 2 or 3, and see how you get on. Remember that once you choose a variable, you must look at each and every example of it in order to quantify its use effectively. Also, consider that some variables require more explanation than others.

Part B

Listen to the two recordings provided in Recording Group B (Osborne 1, Osborne 2). Please note that Osborne 1 begins mid-sentence. Identify and describe any differences between the speech styles in the two recordings, and then explain why you think these differences might have occurred. Refer to any relevant topics and reading from the unit in your answer. You do not need to quantitatively analyse the variation, but you might choose to in order to help your explanation. See notes at the end of his document for some context of the recordings.

Both sections will be assessed against the standard marking criteria, available on Moodle. Your use of examples and the subsequent analysis will be evaluated against the ‘Argument’, ‘Research’, and ‘Critical Analysis’ sections of the marking criteria. But specific guidance, practice, and examples will be provided throughout the course to help make your projects as strong as possible
