Module 3 introduces you to sociological research and major sociological categories of analytical exploration. This builds upon the basic concepts learned in Part 1 and the sociological thought (theory) we applied to thinking about society and social institutions in Part 2. Assessment 3 provides a formal learning opportunity for you to demonstrate progressed learning of Learning Outcome 2, and achievement of our final Learning Outcome, “be able to demonstrate an ability to evaluate contemporary issues and problems from a sociological perspective”, by completing a sociological evaluation of the contemporary issue and problems (detailed in the assessment’s ‘Content’ section below) to complete the following task:
TASK TOPIC: Using Module 3’s required subject material and independent library research (see structure/content instructions), sociologically evaluate ONE issue/problem the ‘true cost’ of a globalised economy displays for your chosen ‘social institution’ and ‘social category’ from having watched the documentary, The True Cost.
Assessment 3 STRUCTURE: 
Assessment 3's structure is a sociological evaluation presented using the structure of an academic essay. The assignment ‘purpose’ is for you to demonstrate your learning of Module 3’s required subject material and developing academic sociology library research/reading practice that enables you to use such information to 'evaluate' a contemporary issue/problem observed by watching the documentary The True Cost, from the ‘lens’ of a specific ‘social institution’ and ‘social category’. You may also use the supplemental material provided in Module 3 and must supplement all subject material by conducting independent (online is fine) academic library research that finds, uses, and cites a minimum of 5, and maximum of 8, sociology journal articles or sociology books/book chapters published between 2010-2020.
STRUCTURE INSTRUCTIONS:
a. Please 'Structure' your Assessment by creating a Word document (no other file format will be accepted);
b. The word limit is approximately 1500 words (+/- 5%); assignments less than 1400 words or beyond 1600 words will receive a maximum score of 50 points and be returned without marking feedback.
c. As a ‘formal essay’, please write a short ‘Introduction’ that ‘introduces’ the topic of your assignment and a ‘Conclusion’ that makes relevant and specific reference to information learned in Module 3.1 (Research & Evaluation), as detailed in ‘Content Instructions’.
d. The Reference List does not 'count' toward's the assessment's total 'word count' and requires formatting following APA guidelines, 7th edition.
e. Include your name, CSU ID#, word count excluding Reference List, and the assessment title (Assessment 3 SOC101 202060) on the first page of your document
 f. You will need to submit your assessment through 'Turn-it-in' software and include a copy of your 'Turn-it-In' report that confirms this assignment contains entirely your own writing, ideas, and does not cut/paste sentences/phrases from any other source without formal academic citation. Assignments that do not include this report will receive zero points for the 'Referencing' section of the marking rubric.
g. Use 1.5 spacing, 11 pt font in black, Times font, and include a footer containing page #s and your name/CSU ID#. 
Assessment 3 CONTENT: 
a. Academic Library Research Requirement - To fulfill the requirements for a passing mark for Assessment 3, you must use and cite at least a minimum of 5, and maximum of 8, relevant sociology journal articles or sociology books/book chapters published between 2010-2020, AND.
b. Module 3 Required Subject Material Requirement - To full the two Module 3 required subject material requirement, you must cite and use a minimum of two Module 3 lectures and two Module 3 textbook chapters (one which must be Chapter 4, Research & Evaluation), AND 
c. Documentary - The final content required to 'pass' Assessment 3 is your viewing the documentary, The True Cost, and making reference to the content of this documentary in a sociologically-relevant manner in your written assessment, showing Module 3 learning and academic sociology publication (books/journal articles) reading comprehension/application.
Points will be lost for exceeding/excluding required content. 
CONTENT INSTRUCTIONS:
1. First, review all Module 3 required subject material (textbook chapters and lectures), ideally commencing when this Assessment task opens (the week of 24 August) and starting the latest by 14 September 2020.
2. Second, access and watch the documentary, True Cost.  CSU’s library purchased an educational copyright license for student viewing in SOC101 in 202060. A web link will be provided on our I2 site under ‘Assessment 3’ by 24 August.
3. Third, reflecting on Module 1 and 2 learning, please choose ONE of the following ‘social institutions’: a. Law b. Government c. Health d. Media
4. Fourth, reflecting on Module 3 learning about ‘social categories’, please choose ONE of the following: 1) Class 2) Ethnicity 3) Gender
5. Now, thinking about your chosen ‘social institution’ and ‘social category’, what can you ‘see’ in the documentary if you exercise your sociological imagination? Begin your independent library research to find academic sociology publications about this social institution and social category separately (i.e., how sociologists ‘think about’ law, government, health or media; and, separately, how sociologists think about class, gender, or ethnicity). This is ‘general’ background research.
6. Sixth, reflect on Module 3’s ‘social movements’ learning. Does this offer further insight about your chosen institution/category in relation to what you saw in the documentary? If yes, then use this to help you ‘sociologically evaluate’ the topic; if not, then consider noting why social movement theory/concepts are sociologically less helpful for understanding the issue/problem, citing subject material in both cases.
7. Now, having started to ‘review the sociology literature’, from your library research an early step in the ‘research process’, write an academically referenced ‘essay’ that uses this learning to ‘sociologically evaluate’ ONE issue/problem that you, as the sociologist, ‘see’ from the documentary and your library research reading from the ‘lens’ of your ‘social institution’ and ‘social category’. For instance, if you chose law & ethnicity, and ‘saw’ the problem of workplace discrimination’, then this would be the focus of your essay. Please make sure you ‘evaluate’ this issue/problem (in my example, workplace discrimination) by explaining it to your audience. Tell us what the problem is sociologically, why it exists/continues, and how – if we look at it from a sociological lens – then we may understand why social change is/is not happening.
8. Finally, as you ‘conclude’ your evaluation, please cite and draw upon learning from the ‘Research & Evaluation’ Module 3.1 to make a ‘professional’ recommendation that, citing the academic sociology research literature you used, suggests what future sociological investigation may wish to focus upon in light of your evaluation of the specific issue/problem discussed.
Assessment 3 Summary & Tips:
1. Assessment 3 preparation support commences 24 August 2020.
2. Assessment 3 only assesses Module 3 and is worth half/50% your final grade. 
3. The maximum length is 1500 (no more than +/- 5%).
4. All sociology 'library research' can be done online using CSU's electronic databases; CSU Library staff are here to help you learn how to conduct searches!
5. As a 'formal essay', this assessment does assess written English language expression and points will be lost for misspelling, typos, incorrect formatting/citation, and not following the instructions contained in this outline. 
6. Assessment 3 requires you to write an introduction and conclusion. The 'evaluation' should show flow/connection between paragraphs, with each paragraph contributing sociology 'content' that addresses the 'task topic' stated in this outline. 
7. You are encouraged to work with CSU's Library and ALLaN support staff on earlier drafts to develop university learning skills (academic writing, library research, plagiarism avoidance, etc.); it will not be possible for the Subject Coordinator or Markers to review drafts prior to formal assessment submission.
8. Please learn how to APA format your Reference List and in-text citations (i.e., references you cite with direct quotes and/or paraphrase in your assignment). Please avoid using any 'popular' resources, as only 'academic sociology publications' and required SOC101 Module 3 content are to be used to address the topic. Do, however, made explicit reference to examples/ideas derived from the documentary (which does not need to be cited in the Reference List). 
9. The 'marking rubric' will be used to mark your assignment. Please look at each 'marking criteria' before starting Assessment 3 and self-review your assignment before its formal submission to check that all components are included and covered.

It is important that you commence planning time to complete Assessment 3 after completion of Module 1 to allow adequate time for searching Library databases and/or obtaining inter-library books/loans, researching/learning how to format a Reference List using APA (American Psychological Association) guidelines, watching the documentary, and completing Module 3 required learning activities that support Assessment 3 sociology learning. As a written assignment, Assessment 3 requires formal English language that avoids colloquial phrases/terms and applies 'academic writing' style. Please write in the 'third person' (i.e., 'This report explores...), rather than 'first person' (i.e., 'I think...'). In contrast with Assessment 2, you must proofread your assignment for spelling, grammatical, punctuation, and other 'technical writing' errors. CSU's ALLaN team is available to help you learn academic writing, so please book an appointment so they may help you with early drafts of your assignment before your formal submission. Likewise, CSU's Library team are available to help teach you how to use online databases and locate 'academic' publications. ALLaN and/or the Library may be able to assist you in learning how to access/use 'Turn-it-In' software's report to support your learning how to 'paraphrase' correctly to avoid accidental plagiarism.
