Assignment Task

1) You are a reporter who is writing a newspaper article about the barriers faced by Canadians with disabilities. The table below shows some results of the Canadian Survey on Disability (2022). Specifically, respondents were asked about different types of barriers they’ve experienced because of their condition(s). The table below shows the percentage of respondents who reported that they often or always experienced barriers in various types of situations. The results are categorized by both age and gender of respondents. You need to write a 1-2 page (single-spaced) newspaper article (roughly 3-4 paragraphs) about barriers experienced by Canadians with disabilities. Don’t just recite the numbers in the table – tell a story around the numbers.

2) Access Statistics Canada’s Canadian Survey on Disability - 2022:

Find two different questions/variables for each of the following levels of measurement, and briefly explain why you identified them as such:

a) nominal

b) ordinal

c) interval

3) Retrieve and read the following article from the library (which is available online), and briefly answer the questions below, in your own words:

a) What is the dependent variable being examined? What are the two independent variables? What is the unit of analysis?

b) What is the main research hypothesis(es) being tested? What is the authors’ main conclusion(s)?

c) The analysis shows that the percentage of people engaged in housework increases with age. But what about the amount of time spent on housework per day? Analysis using the same data set shows that males aged 65-74 spend an average of 147.3 minutes per day on housework while females in this age group spend an average of 193.3 minutes per day (the standard errors are 4.2 and 3.9). Calculate and interpret the 95% confidence intervals for these averages. Is the difference statistically significant?

d) What about younger people? Among those respondents aged 15-24, the averages are 48.9 minutes for males and 63.5 minutes for females (with standard errors of 3.6 and 3.9). Is the difference between males and females among 15-24 year-olds statistically significant?

4) Below are the results of an analysis of a recent survey of Canadians. The first table shows responses to the following question, broken down by the respondent’s visible minority identification: In the past 12 months, have you personally experienced discrimination by others?

5) One way of measuring a person’s social network is to count the number of people they know who have different types of occupations. The 2020 Canadian General Social Survey did that, by asking the following question:

Here is a list of jobs that people you know may have. These people could be family or relatives, close friends or someone else you know. By “knowing” a person, we mean that you know them by name and well enough to contact them.

The different types of jobs listed from which the respondent could choose were:

Bus driver; Senior executive of a large company; Home or office cleaner; Hairdresser or barber; Human resources or personnel manager; Lawyer; Car mechanic; Nurse; Police officer; School teacher

An index was created by adding up the total number of people in those jobs that a respondent knows. The index ranges from 0 to 10, where 0 indicates that the respondent didn’t know any people doing those jobs, and 10 indicates knowing people in all 10 jobs. The tables below analyze people’s social networks on the basis of the respondent’s education and income.
