Introduction
Welcome to the SOCR 3728 module. This course will introduce you to some of the basic principles and aspects of social research. However, we will not merely concentrate on theoretical concepts, but also give you an opportunity of practising the basic principles of the research process by demonstrating your theoretical insights and skills in the writing of a research proposal. Research, after all, is a practical endeavour.

DOING SOCIAL RESEARCH

About this theme “Science” is a familiar word; everyone uses it. It is often confused with technology or equated with academic courses. In comparison with other ways of learning and knowing about the world, science is regarded as a conscious, deliberate and rigorous undertaking. Similarly, inquiry is a natural human activity. Much of ordinary human inquiry seeks to explain events and predict the future. This theme examines inquiry as a natural human activity. It further focuses on the sources of everyday knowledge and on some kinds of errors made in normal inquiry. Finally, it explores what makes science – in particular, social science, different compared to everyday knowledge.

Aim The aim of this theme is to provide students with the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of the nature of human inquiry and science.
