2.  A brief description of the research setting in which the data were obtained, acknowledging any ethical issues of data collection. Provide a discussion and justification of your methods here – the what, when, where and how of what you did.
3.  A detailed account and analysis of the data you have collected.
4. Some discussion of the outcome of the research and its overall sociological significance. For example, have your findings confirmed the results of previous empirical research or do they challenge these? How can sociological/criminological theory help you account for your findings?
5.  A critical reflection on the method/s you have used: what were their strengths and weaknesses?

Domestic violence, and the online presence of the topic, can reveal a myriad of different opinions and thoughts. Ideologies support these differing thoughts and opinions and this report will aim to identify and uncover the ideologies motivating a discourse on the topic of domestic violence being perpetuated by the media in an online environment.

State your research question(s) (no more than two):
What ideologies are present on the topic of domestic violence in the media? Which method (CDA / Visual) do you propose to use to collect your data? Critical Discourse Analysis will be used to collect the data. In particular, Bloor & Bloor’s version of CDA will be used, including technique such as identifying and analysing metaphors in data. This method will be particularly useful with regards to discussion of ideologies represented by comments surrounding the topic of domestic violence.

Who / what will be your sample? How will you identify your materials?

The sample will consist of news articles available from news.com.au under the search term ‘Domestic Violence.’ Convenience sampling will be used for the purpose of this report. Where do you propose to collect your data/materials? I propose to collect my data from news.com.au, exclusively including articles included under
the search term ‘Domestic Violence.’

How will you manage the ethical concerns associated with conducting qualitative research online (address issues of confidentiality, consent and trust)?
