Question
How has soil recovered in former sand-mined areas on sand dunes near Seal Rocks?
Length
There is a length limit for this report, not a word limit. The length of each section is set out below.
On a single A4 page give the project title, Introduction to the study and aims of the project, citing the appropriate literature.
On a single A4 page present your geomorphic map based on interpretation of the LiDAR DEM of the Seal Rocks area (and air photographs), including clear labelling/colouring of geomorphic units; legend; orientation; scale; title; field sites.
On a single A4 page give (1) the Environmental Setting of the study, including relevant information on climate, geology, topography etc; (2) the Experimental Design (how the sites were selected and how they contribute to testing the hypothesis); (3) Methods (what data was collected and how).
Lighthouse Beach* Results . (a) On a single A4 page show a map of Lighthouse Beach including the transect location, and your Results , including the topographic transect (tape and clino survey), and soil/sediment profiles. (b) In half a page of text describe features of the beach, topography, sediment and soil relevant to the geomorphic history and evidence of soil formation and evolution (cite relevant literature).
Bridge Hill Dune* Results . (a) On a single A4 page show a map of the dune including your transect and profile locations and your results , including the topographic transect (tape and clino survey) and soil profiles showing the correlation of the soil horizons. (b) In half a page of text describe the pattern and degree of soil development at this site and with respect to the Lighthouse Beach dunes and the known age of the Bridge Hill dune, citing relevant literature.
Sand mined site* Results . (a) On a single A4 page show a map of the site, including your transect and profile locations and your results , including the topographic transect (tape and clino survey) and soil profiles showing the correlation of the soil horizons. (b) In half a page of text describe the pattern of soil formation and the degree of soil development at this site and relative to the other sites, citing relevant literature.
Discussion : (a) On a single A4 page draw a diagram(s) showing the degree and type of soil development covered by your research including a graph showing soil development at each site, and (b) on a single A4 page discuss this in light of your evidence and comparable studies. Cite and discuss relevant literature.
Assessment Criteria
This report is based on the first weekend fieldtrip, the preparatory practical sessions, post-fieldwork data analysis and your own reading and research on the topic. You will be given a question which you must address in your report. The research and thought which go into each report are an important part of your learning in this unit. We expect that you will deepen your understanding of the topic and your field experience by discovering the links between your observations and previous published research in the scientific literature. The report should be presented with a high standard of presentation (clarity and accuracy, not necessarily ‘pretty’), with diagrams, maps, graphs and tables (as appropriate) and standard scientific citation and referencing. You will be provided with some essential and useful readings for these reports but you should also undertake your own research of the primary scientific literature.
