Highlights
Ultrasound is being increasingly used to evaluate and guide treatment of greater trochanteric pain syndrome. I would like you to consider a 62-year-old female who presents with generalised hip pain exacerbated by walking up stairs. On physical examination, the pain is most intense at the lateral aspect of the hip.
1) Discuss the transducers and equipment parameters that are required to perform the examination.
2) Describe the anatomy of the relevant lateral hip skeletal and soft tissue structures.
3) Describe the sonographic technique including patient positions, image selection and dynamic manoeuvres which are employed.
4) Describe the normal sonographic appearances and appearances of common pathological conditions you may expect to encounter in such a clinical scenario.
5) Other than pathologies of the hip abductor apparatus, what differential diagnoses should be considered and what clinical clues would make you consider extending your examination to include these?
6) Please include ultrasound images obtained on a normal volunteer or patient in your clinical practice with relevant anatomy clearly annotated.
