Abstract 
According to the poweroptimal.com (2018) report, it indicates that over the past decade, South African’s main electricity supply (Eskom) has increased the price of electricity by 356 %, with a 74% inflation rate over the same period. This shows that the rate of electricity in South Africa has increased four times faster than inflation rate over the same period. Hence, it places a demand for households and businesses to monitor and manage their energy consumption. Therefore, introducing energy-efficient technologies to residential has become essential, which will not only solve the country's energy crises but also reduce carbon usage and greenhouse gas emissions. 
This mini dissertation’s main objective was to conduct a quantitative and qualitative research on the impact of smart technologies in buildings, in terms of energy saving. The insight of the study’s objective was achieved through conducting a comparison study for the energy consumption (kWh) of two mixed residences at the University of Johannesburg, where one is equipped with energy-efficient smart technologies and the other one is without those smart technologies. For accurate and reliable results, the energy consumption (kWh) data for February 2019 to December 2019 was used, since almost all students were at their residences during this period. Furthermore, interviews with both residences’ managers and current residing students were also conducted in ensuring accuracy on the energy consumption pattern.
The selected residences are Thomas Sankara and Mayine residences, where Thomas Sankara is equipped with energy-efficient smart technologies, and its counterpart Mayine is without energy-efficient smart technologies. Thomas Sankara residence is equipped with smart load technologies, such as smart lighting systems, smart heating ventilation air cooling systems, and as well as water heat pumps. These two residences are almost having the same number of students. According to the UJ Student Affairs Office (2019), Thomas Sankara had 240 students, with Mayine residence having 246 students. The hypothesis postulates that Thomas Sakara would use less energy than Mayine residence, due to the fact that Mayine has more female as compared to Thomas Sankara residence. 
Thomas Sankara has formed the basis of the study since it is the one equipped with smart technologies which make it more energy-efficient than before and as compared to Mayine residence. The energy consumption (kWh) and their respective energy costs (Rands) data were analysed and compared graphically. The difference of the two energy consumption Mean Values (x ?) indicated that there is a 46.26 % difference between the two residences energy consumptions, which means that the consumption at Mayine residence almost double the Thomas Sankara residence.
