Highlights
Task
I met a resident who was complaining about not being able to walk as initially when the resident started living in Southern Cross Care, the resident could walk with the help of walking stick. After coming to SSC the resident fell twice in the shower and the specialist informed that the resident won’t be able to walk again. Since then the resident tries to work on the legs by going to Gym so that the resident would be able walk again. I engaged with the resident and tried my best to know about the resident’s strength and interest and tried to talk more about it. The resident likes to see his daughter once a week. The resident loved horse riding. The resident tamed the horse at the age of 14. The resident also shared the story about his first meeting with his wife.
Tuesday
In the morning I had group supervision at Pines and it was lovely to see the students and supervisor after a long time. Supervisor showed a short movie on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander’s stolen generation and LGBTIQ. The video was really helpful as its really important to prepare ourselves as Social Workers when we work with these communities. Today in the afternoon was the cooking activity and residents were encouraged to join the activity. Meanwhile I did a small activity of getting a sentence translated into various languages as there were residents from Ukraine, Ireland. Residents enjoyed translating the English sentence into their language.
Wednesday
Today a resident came to play Bingo game whom I have never seen playing before. When asked the resident said, she is playing Bingo after six months as the resident had incontinence in bowel and had swollen legs. The resident was so happy to share her experience playing Bingo game.
Thursday
I met a resident who was sharing that the carers force to get the personal care done fast as they have other residents to look after. The resident likes to get things done at her own pace. The resident loves to talk about her ex-partner and her two children. The resident is concerned as her ex-partner lives with his girlfriend and the resident is not happy with how her ex-partner’s girlfriend bosses around her ex-partner and the ex-partner doesn’t have freedom to do anything in the house. The residents feels sad as her daughter doesn’t talk to her anymore. I sat with the resident and was actively listening to what the resident was saying.
