THE SCENARIO
Imagine you are a GIS analyst of a private company, named VECRAS (the acronym stands for VectorRaster), based in Perth. The company is in charge of evaluating the impact of infrastructural growths (eg. roads) or population growth on land use/cover changes of Erbil City of Kurdistan region. The city is regarded as one of the oldest human settlements in the world which dated back to 6000 BC, and currently it is the capital of Kurdistan region. As part of the company, you have been assigned to carry out a GIS investigation on the suggested region using vector tools, embedded in ESRI’s ArcGIS. The overall objective of this work is to assist the company to identify areas experienced significant changes in land use/cover between 1989 and 2014.

At this stage, you (in consultation with the Head of GIS section of VECRAS) have been provided two land use/cover vector datasets, representing 1989 and 2014, extracted from Landsat data (actual data sources are provided for your information). In addition, the location of the city centre of Erbil is supplied in a text file [For SPAT5006, additional shapefile includes an aspect polygon shapefile and also population data].

You must, therefore, carry out and report on the following tasks:

1. Import the .CSV or .xlsx file (CityCentre.csv/.xlsx) into ArcMap and save it as a shapefile (P3);

2. Import provided land use/land cover shapefiles of two years to geodatabase along with CityCentre data (P4); [You may need to define (reproject) the datasets using ArcGIS whilst importing to geodatabase]

3. Examine the data layers and report on the coordinate systems that they are in (P2,P3);

4. Use FOUR buffer distances (5, 10, 15, 20 km) using CityCentre shapefile and identify major land use/cover types in 1989 and 2014. Carry out the necessary buffering, intersection and overlay tasks (P4, P5). You must report area (either in km2 or hectares) of each land use category with the name for these two dates in a tabular format. Comment on the changes of land use/cover categories between two years, and determine which distance zone (or buffer zone) from the city centre experienced dramatic land use/cover changes;

5. Produce two maps showing land use/cover of the study area of 1989 and 2014. Use CityCentre locations and other provided data to contextualize the information. The map should have cartographic elements such as scale bar, legend and title (P4, P5).

6. In addition to tasks 1?4, use the provided ‘aspect’ shapefile to determine the direction of land use/cover changes in the city of Erbil between two years (eg. 1989 and 2014) [Hint: to carry out this task, you need to intersect the result from step 4 with aspect data provided. Then, you need to estimate the changes of each land use/cover categories with respect to the direction/aspect in tabular form]. Download total population for the area from BB, and report population growth over time (1977–2014) in the area and relate your findings from above steps with changes in population of the area.
