The year level is Year 3 and there are 24 students. There are particular groups within the class who will need targeted learning support. The class had a range of varied levels in areas of literacy, including two students who regularly attended the MiniLit literacy intervention program run within the school. The class includes both reluctant speakers and writers, however these are not usually the same students. There are two EALD students. There are three to five students who regularly finish literacy tasks early, two of whom usually do not need extension activities; rather they need to go back and edit because they rush through work and miss parts. All of the students like drawing. The students in this class like being read to by the teacher, they often vote for it as their free time group activity.

The learning environment is open plan, there are four classes of the same year level within the same building and separated by dividers with one communal learning area. The classroom culture emphasises respectful relationships, and being aware of your feelings, including feeling ‘ready to learn’ before starting activities. Building good relationships with the students in this class is key to their behaviour and willingness to participate in literacy activities.
