Task:
Option 1: Visual Essay
Throughout this subject we have discussed issues of representation as they play out in relation to contemporary development concerns. In this task, you are asked to provide a visually informed critical analysis of the role of representation in contemporary development practice. This assessment is intended to demonstrate your capacity to understand and critically assess the role of representation in relation to discourses and practices of development.
Task:
For your assessment, you are required to produce a “visual essay” that examines representations of a specific development issue of your own choosing (eg gender, famine, sustainability, etc).
Once you have identified your chosen issue, you should source 3- 5 images used in media, advertising, or reporting (including internal reporting) of the issue. You should have no more than 5 and no less than 3 images.
You will then use your chosen images as the basis of an analysis that relates representations of your issue as seen through your images to discourses of development. Your images are equivalentto 200 words text and should be embedded purposefully in 1400 words of accompanying text. They should not be merely tacked on; they are central element of the analysis. Together the text and images should create a cohesive critical analysis of the representation of the chosen issue.
Option 2: Research Essay
Write a 1600 word research essay that responds to one of the following questions:
1. Is it important to consider colonialism in the context of contemporary development projects and approaches? Why?
2. What are the implications of today’s geography of development for the contemporary practice of development?
3. What is a ‘grassroots-based approach’ to development and what are the strengths and weakness of this approach?
4. Why and how should gender be included in a consideration of development?
5. What is a ‘rights-based approach’ to development and what are the strengths and weaknesses of using ‘human rights’ as a focus for development policy?
6. Given the debate about the definitions of ‘sustainable development’, is it still worth using this term?
