Lilly is a speech pathologist who works in a community clinic with children who have speech and language disorders. Lilly has a new client Bobby, a 5 year old girl who has speech and language difficulties. Bobby has been diagnosed with a phonological disorder (difficulty using speech sounds in words) which is a type of speech sound disorder (a general term for phonological disorder and other sound related disorders). Lilly assessed Bobby’s phonological awareness skills (awareness of sounds which includes phonemic awareness, awareness of syllables and/or rhyming words) and found that they were below the expected level for her age. Bobby’s mother wants to help Bobby to improve her phonological awareness skills because she is worried that these difficulties may affect Bobby’s reading and writing. Bobby is currently attending a school which does not provide speech pathology services. Bobby’s mother is keen for Bobby to have speech therapy at the community clinic. Lilly thinks that phonological awareness interventions may help Bobby improve her phonological awareness skills. She has heard about different programs, for example, the Gillon Phonological Awareness Training Programme.
