At this point you must not contact schools, day care centres etc. as you do not have the required police clearances and Working with Children Check cards. Ask friends, neighbours, classmates and any other contacts you have if they have or know a child you may observe. If you are having difficulty finding a participant, you may use Blackboard to ask your student colleagues if they know anyone who might be willing. You will be required to observe, and interact with, this child on3separate occasions throughout the semester. Over the course of these observations, you must observe four of the following areas: play, comprehension, pragmatics, narrative, semantics, syntax/morphology, phonology, literacy/pre-literacy skills.Observation one: Area one and two
Observation two: Area one again and area three
Observation three: Area two or three again and area four
Repetition of some of the areas allows you to learn from your first observation and develop the goals and activities.
Prior to observing your child you need to obtain informed consent from the child’s parent or legal guardian. You must ensure that the parent/guardian is aware that you will be recording their child and presenting and discussing their child anonymously in class and in the assignment. Obtaining informed consent requires that you provide a brief statement of the purpose of your involvement with the individual, and obtain their signature. There is a consent form in the Child Logbook Assignment folder on Blackboard – make the appropriate changes to personalise this document, print it out and have the parent/guardian complete it before you commence your first observation. Please hand in a de-identified scan of this consent form with your assignment.
You will also need to construct a demographic information sheet. You will need to plan questions that you think are relevant to your observation and analysis of the child’s language. Ask the parent to complete it prior to your first observation so that you can use it to plan your first session. You will then include a scanned de-identified copy in your first submission.
It is crucial that you make a start on these observations early in the semester, and that you structure your observations carefully. You will need to research the language characteristics you can expect to see in children of your chosen age group.
