Assessment – Video Presentation
Students are to choose one case study from the case studies provided below. Students are then required to develop and deliver an 8 - 10 minute PPT/oral/video presentation to be submitted by the Friday of week 8. By drawing primarily from what you have learnt in this unit students must explain how they might understand and respond to their chosen case. Challenges and ethical dilemmas must also be identified and discussed.
Your power point slides for your video oral presentation should include at least 5 (scholarly) journal articles or books. The format of your slides will be discussed in greater detail during tutorials.

Case studies
Amy
You are a drug and alcohol counsellor employed by YSAS (Youth Substance Abuse Service).
Amy is your 14 year old client. She was born in Australia, and she is the daughter of Chinese parents. Amy’s father died when she was three years old and she lives at home with her mother who suffers from a mental illness.
Amy has been smoking marijuana every day for at least the past year. Her Student Welfare Coordinator referred her to YSAS for counselling because Amy was coming to school marijuana affected most days. Amy is also very isolated at school. She has low self-esteem, poor social skills and poor hygiene.
Amy meets with you for her regular Wednesday counselling session. You have encouraged Amy to work toward reducing her marijuana use and she has agreed to do this. You talk to Amy about how she is going. During the discussion Amy tells you that she has a new boyfriend, she seems happy about the new relationship, her presentation is brighter and more positive than it usually is. You ask some questions about the boyfriend and find out that he is 22 years old, that Amy regularly sleeps over at his house and that he shares the house with 4 other males all aged in their twenties.

Ben
Ben is a 16 year old Indigenous young man who has been the subject of many previous notifications to Child Protection with regard to environmental neglect, parental substance misuse and placement instability. Three months ago Ben’s case was referred to you, a Child Protection Worker in the Child Protection Adolescent Protective Team. The main concerns were around Ben’s high-risk behaviours that included substance misuse, absconding from home, criminal activities, and associating with other young people with problem and high risk behaviours.
Ben has experienced many placement moves during his life, moving from the care of his parents to a number of extended family members. Now he is living with his grandmother who he says is the only family member he has every really felt comfortable with. However his grandmother finds Ben’s behaviour difficult to manage. Sometimes he becomes angry when he doesn’t get his own way. On a recent occasion he threatened to hurt his grandmother and caused some damage to her home. His grandmother suffers from chronic health issues.
Ben’s main professional supports come from you and from his Youth Justice worker. You are thinking about what you can do to support Ben and his family.

Oliver
You are a youth justice worker working to support Oliver, who is 17 years old, living at home with his mother.
Oliver’s mother Cathy has a history of heroin addiction. She is currently on the methadone program and states that she hasn’t used heroin for over 12 months. However you suspect Cathy is not being honest with you and you believe she has started using heroin again. Cathy has revealed to you a long history of suffering family violence in the form of severe physical and verbal abuse. She is currently not in an intimate relationship.
Oliver has a 19 year old brother who was previously involved in child protection and lived in out-of-home care. Oliver’s brother is currently serving a custodial sentence at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre.
Oliver is on a Youth Supervision Order, mainly in relation to thefts and burglaries. He goes out every day with friends, sometimes not returning home for 2 or 3 days at a time. Cathy is worried about him and feels helpless to know what to do to help her son. She is worried he will end up in prison like his older brother.
