This assessment requires the student to undertake some research and write a formal essay to address the following questions: 

  • How is the performance of the Australian construction industry in delivering projects on-time and within the budget? What are the key factors affecting the cost and time performance of projects in Australia during the construction stage of project delivery? 

You must include an annotated bibliography of at least five (5) journal articles.

PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT 2 
The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to: 
• Determine and apply project management tools and techniques to plan, monitor and control a project to ensure successful project delivery 
• Apply project management processes in the lifecycle stages of construction and finalization for built environment projects. 
ASSIGNMENT TASK 
Each student has to interview a project manager from a construction company that operates as a contractor on construction projects on the following topic: 
The role of risk management in safeguarding successful project delivery 
The focus of the report is a critical comparison between what you are told by the contractor and the theories of project management. Thus, the students are also expected to do research in the literature and review at least 3 journal papers and 1 book on the above-mentioned topic. Your analysis should reference tools, techniques and the practice of risk management. If you wish, you can conduct interviews in pairs. But the report must be written and submitted in an individual basis. 
The potential interview questions can be as follow: 
Project risk management: 
• Brief details of the company 
• The company’s perceptions of success in project delivery, particularly the management of risk in ensuring their success 
• How do contractors deploy risk management plans to deliver their projects successfully? 
o What are the contents of the risk management plan? o What processes the does company use to manage their risks? o Which types of risks are managed by the company? (i.e., safety risks, 
financial risks, technical risks, contractual risks, etc). o What tools and techniques the company uses to identify risks? o What tools and techniques the company uses to analyse risks qualitatively? o What tools and techniques the company uses to analyse risks quantitatively? o What tools and techniques the company uses for risk response planning? o Who is responsible for implementation of risk management process? o Is there any risk breakdown structure developed for the project? o How does the company determine which of the risks should be managed? 
• How the contingencies are determined and added to the tender price? 
• How they incorporate lessons learned regarding risk management in their projects?

The assessment includes a seminar discussion on your project management report.
 
ASSIGNMENT 3 Group project management plan 
PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT 3 
The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to: 
• Apply project management knowledge areas to analyse built environment projects 
• Determine and apply project management tools and techniques to plan, monitor and control a project to ensure successful project delivery 
• Apply project management processes in the lifecycle stages of construction and finalisation for built environment projects. 
ASSIGNMENT TASK 
For this assignment, students are to work in groups of four. Each group is to review the project documentation provided on CloudDeakin, as well as any publicly available project information for similar projects. There is no expectation that you will have full knowledge of the project but you can make reasonable assumptions (based on reliable sources). 
Students MUST NOT approach any individuals who are employed on any real project in order to obtain further information. 
Each group must prepare the Head Contractor’s Project Management Plan (PMP). This PMP will include a full list and examples of all tools that will be used to monitor and control the project. It is permissible to use examples from other projects. However, the examples need to be relevant to this type of project. It is also permissible to develop your own example of a project tool. Tools include checklists, flowcharts, spreadsheets, Gantt charts, registers, matrices, and similar. You must provide details of at least the followings: 

  •  Project Scope (WBS) 
  •  Schedule baseline (Master schedule) 
  •  Cost baseline (time-phased project budget) 
  •  Key Stakeholders 
  •  An organisation chart for the Head Contractor team 
  •  Scope management plan 
  •  Time Management Plan 
  •  Cost Management Plan 

 Risk management plan that includes identification, analysis and response planning for at least 10 risks, excluding site safety risks 

  •  Quality management plan 
  •  Resource management plan 

List any and all assumptions that you make in order to complete this assignment. These assumptions may include design processes, head contract procurement, pre-existing site conditions and construction methodologies. The source of each assumption should be acknowledged in the report. 
The assignment includes a presentation to the student body and answering questions with regard to the presented project.
