Research Title: provide an accurate, informative and concise title to  your subject of no more than

(remove the following directions in RED with your submission)

Use this outline – exactly. Do not create new fonts or graphics that are not called  for. Use ARIAL font 11 or 12 point. Provide ALL the information as requested  using the heading provided. Remember this is NOT a research report, rather it is  about establishing the pathway towards your research project.

Note:

This is your title and first page, you may add a Deakin University logo, header & footer and page numbers if you wish.

I. ABSTRACT/SUMMARY: (6 points of your TOTAL grade) suggest to perhaps write this last

Write an abstract in no more than 250 words. Be direct and to the point  answering what the research topic is, why it is important, state the problem and  how this problem will or would be solved. Note: You can ‘make up’ the findings or summary (as you anticipate it) for completion of the abstract.

II. THE PROPOSAL (48 points of your TOTAL grade)

First of all, this is a research proposal. So you are NOT solving the problem.  However, you are expected to provide:

A. An Opening Statement: (250 words –max with reference(s) support)  Defines the situation, as it now exists. This is in fact related to the ‘scope of  the research’ you will be explaining, however, we are NOT going into  specifics yet. It is a statement to get the readers’ attention.

Ex: ‘Have you ever thought of why we have World hunger?’

Ex: ‘The Australian building industry has recently been criticized for being  less than 50% efficient.’

B. Research Significance & Scope: (500-1000 word max with references)  Next you might think of segueing into the ‘scope of the research’. This is a bit on the ‘background or ‘history’ of the field that you are considering.

For instance, why is the construction industry so non-productive?  What are the present methods that have created this situation? Think about asking the questions that you as an audience would want to know.

Lead into the present ‘problems’ on the subject matter. You might discuss  what is missing after you have explained what already exists C. Aim & Objectives: (250 words)

State the Research Question - explicitly. “The question to be answered here  is….”

Move on to the objectives of the research. You might explicitly state, ‘ This is …(or ‘my’) research is about……the Aim is ….

Bullet point: list the objectives from a global perspective

Ex: To define and develop XXX

Ex: To provide YYY

Ex: To discover whether this structure is feasible….

D. Methods: (500-1000 words with references) begin to suggest the potential  methods’ to be explored on solving your ‘Research Question’ or ‘Aim’ or  ‘Problem Statement’ and how you might do this. What have others done sofar? Where might a potential solution be found? Methods? Cataloguing?  Better organizational process? Etc.

Ex: a matrix of evaluation will be developed to show….

Ex: a mixture of advanced analytical software tools will  allow…..

E. Conclusion (250 words) Finally, you should lead on to what your expected  findings (outcomes) might be and what your research promises to resolve.  Note, the greatest weakness of these presentations is in the HOW question. Therefore, consider HOW you are going to solve the problem you have stated…

Ex: through the method the expected findings of XYZ are…

Ex: this research proposal will promise …..

Provide, in as much as possible, an informative and annotated (minimal but  precise) informative OUTLINE regarding your topic. It is expected to have no  more than 5 major headings. Consider the methods presented in class. A  guide is provided here. A single page for this task is expected (not more).

A. Introduction: (heading here) Ex: Low Income housing and Energy Use 1. sub-categories: Ex: What constitutes low income housing?

2. Problem Statement

3. Research Aim & Objectives:

B. Background, History or/and Literature Review: (heading here) 1. sub-categories Ex: Understanding Energy Use….

2. Summary

C. Method or Discovery or Contributions to subject: (heading here) 1. sub-categories

2. Evaluation Method

3. Approach

D. Discussion or Resolution or Outcomes or Finding

E. Conclusion:
