Task:
Alpacas are reported to be effective as a guardian species for sheep flocks. A UNE study investigated the behaviour of n=44 alpacas (n=22 male and n=22 female, of which 10 were pregnant at the time of the study) in relation to sheep guardianship. Part of the study methodology included (a) two different alpaca temperament tests and (b) an arena test to determine if alpacas were more likely to be attracted towards younger, more vulnerable sheep (lambs), or older sheep (ewes). One of the temperament tests included measurement of flight speed where each alpaca was timed to travel over a distance of 3 m following release from an isolation crate. Another temperament test measured the total time each alpaca was observed pacing (walking in a heightened alert status) in an enclosed area over a period of 2 minutes following the flight speed test. In an arena test, alpaca preference towards younger or older sheep was evaluated by observing if each alpaca positioned themselves within close proximity (1 m) to either lambs or ewes retained in a small pen.
The variables in the A2alpaca.csv dataset include:
• id: alpaca identity number (1 - 44)
• sex: the sex of each alpaca (male OR female)
• pregstatus: pregnancy status by sex of each alpaca (male = nonpregnant males, nonpregnantF = non pregnant females OR pregnantF = pregnant females)
• flightspeed: the period of time (sec) for each alpaca to travel 3 m after release from an isolation crate
• pacing: the total period of time (sec) each alpaca was observed to pace in a confined space
• preference: alpaca preference for either lambs or ewes (ewe, lamb OR none)
