Assignment Task:

Overview

Exploring a research question by collecting your own data set

For this assignment, you must collect at least 20 independent observations or measurements on two variables that seeks to explore a difference or a relationship in the world around you. Refer to the list of possible ideas below if you would like to get some inspiration about what types of studies you could undertake. However, you are also encouraged to come up with your own research question which you could investigate based on where you work or live.

Your response variable must be numerical (i.e., continuous or discrete). Your explanatory variable can be either categorical or numerical, but should not be dates (this is outside the scope of STAT100). If the explanatory variable is categorical, make sure you have a maximum of 6 different levels and a minimum of 6 observations for each level. You must use one of the sampling strategies discussed in STAT100 (simple random, stratified, cluster or multi-stage).

There are restrictions on the type of subject you can apply your study to – non-observational studies on human or vertebrate animals are not allowed (refer to Ethical and safety considerations notes on data collection on Page 6). If you step outside of these ethics guidelines there will be a minimum of a 20% grade penalty.

Some ideas and examples A few examples of possible research questions are listed below however we are sure you can imagine many more. The most important thing is to give yourself enough TIME to conduct the experiment in a way that will allow you to meet all of the criteria. You could even run a small pilot study of your chosen study to test if your idea will work, and to better estimate the timeframe to complete the study.
