Overview

Scientists are very interested in monitoring changes in penguin populations in Antarctica, as recent research has shown some vulnerabilities in these populations.

A study has been conducted which looks at a number of species of penguins in Antarctica in the Anvers region and some characteristics of individuals within these species. A sample of this data has been provided to you (note that this sample is different for all students), containing 80 individuals. The following columns are included in the dataset:

  • Sample Number: An identification number for each individual
  • Species: 3 different species with common names of Adelie, Chinstrap and Gentoo
  • Sex: MALE or FEMALE
  • CulmenLength: A measure of the length of the culmen (in mm)
  • FlipperLength: A measure of the length of the left flipper (in mm)

You will explore and analyse the data using R, and present your findings in a written report. Your goal is to use appropriate statistical inference methods to answer the following three research questions:

  1. Is there evidence that one species of penguins is more or less prevalent in the Anvers region?
  2. Do males have significantly larger culmen length than females?
  3. Is there a significant linear relationship between culmen length and flipper length for Chinstrap penguins?

You may need to refer to the R glossary on the Moodle site for guidance on how to subset the data to look at only the Chinstrap penguins

  • Produce a plot of the data to explore the research question:
  • Ensure that each plot has a title/caption
  • Refer to and describe what the plot indicates in relation to the research question in your report - ie what does the plot suggest?
  • Identify the relevant statistical (hypothesis) test and conduct the appropriate analysis to answer the research question by:
  • Following the steps of hypothesis testing explicitly
  • In addition to stating the hypotheses in words, provide the corresponding mathematical notation, where appropriate
  • State and check the necessary conditions for each test, referring to relevant plots
  • Include relevant confidence intervals.
  • Calculate and present all relevant test statistics and associated output using RStudio. When including RStudio output in this section please follow presentation guidelines.
  • Text output from RStudio should be presented in a table, with an appropriate caption above the table
  • Plots should be presented as a figure, with an appropriate caption below the figure
  • Give a concise and informative interpretation of your findings by:
  • Referring to your stated hypotheses as well as any relevant calculated values from your RStudio output including summary statistics, test statistics, degrees of freedom, p-values and confidence
  • Relating it to the context of the research question

Presentation 

Produce a report in your choice of word processing software (eg Microsoft Word or Google Docs) that includes all of the above information. Ensure that your report includes a title, is logically structured, and the sections within each question are clearly indicated with headings or itemised. Include all the R code that you used at the end of each research question – please show all code in a separate font (a fixed width font like Courier New is ideal). Each plot should have a label and a caption immediately below (eg Figure 1: Boxplot of …), and each table should have a label and caption immediately above. Save your report as a single pdf file, and submit that file on Moodle.
