2. Telehealth Australia Review
Summarise the evolution and uptake of telehealth in Australia (use only resources in chronological order from 2015-2021). Provide an informed summary based on current evidence (2020-21). Based on the pandemic related situation in 2020 , what are the key barriers to implementing telehealth fully in Australia? In your informed opinion, how can the barriers be addressed? Provide practical recommendations in your own words.

• Only 32% of the population lives in remote areas of Australia. The roll out of NBN network have been addressing the infrastructure issues in relation to broadband provision in remote areas already. The rest of the population lives in urban areas – but spread out into suburban areas. And these areas also need to be serviced by telehealth as the distance is often a difficulty for many people.
• There is mandatory training for new health practitioners in telehealth/ICT practices (including doctors, nurses, allied health) and mandatory rural postings for new graduates and new immigrant professionals. This is to particularly service remote areas via telehealth services.
• Electronic health record for every citizen that links all other services (such as GP, pathology etc); payment for telemedicine and telehealth services to practitioners – came into force in February 2019. Citizens have an option to opt-out of having a universal electronic health record (approx. 10% of the population had opted out. However, this percentage has significantly lowered in 2020 as people have begun opting in due to the pandemic situation and contact tracing is also being implemented).
