Guidelines for a Statement of Purpose (SOP) – Onshore Applicants

The Statement of Purpose (SOP) document is a mandatory part of the international student application process. International applicants to CQUniversity are required to submit an SOP in support of their intention to study in Australia. Each applicant needs to provide information in their own words addressing the topics below as they relate to their individual circumstances. The points below are a guide only. Please attach your responses to your application as a separate PDF document. The recommended length for the SOP is 2-3 pages clearly addressing the topics below.

1. Applicant’s background and personal circumstances

a. Information about applicant’s family background. If married, details about a spouse, education/qualification level and career information for the spouse; and date of marriage.

b. Reasons highlighting intention to study in Australia and incentives to return back to home country – family circumstances, family assets, possible job prospects, etc.

2. Applicant’s academic background and career history

a. Detailed information of academic career starting from High School to the highest qualification undertaken by the applicant including Date, Month and Year of commencement and Date, Month and Year of completion.

b. Detailed information of work experience, if any, including Date, Month and Year of Commencement and Date, Month and Year of completion. Information on how your employment history is relevant to your current qualification/s and future studies in Australia.

c. Future career plans and remuneration – information on the proposed action plan on how the career outcomes will be achieved, highlighting the intended area/job title/designation and targeted companies for employment upon returning to home country and expected salary – providing information on how the amount invested in studying overseas will be of benefit after returning back to home country; ideally highlighting short term goals, mid-term goals and long term goals. (please note the quoted expected salary should be realistic and based on market/industry trends).

3. Applicant’s research on CQUniversity and the course for which they have applied

a. Detailed information on research done on similar programs/courses being taught in the home country, including the reason for not studying in the home country.

b. Information on research/comparison between USA, UK, Canada and Australia as a study destination and reason highlighting why Australia is the preferred destination.

c. Knowledge about CQUniversity – applicant should be able to demonstrate knowledge about the University, its origin, number of campuses, student support services, etc. Also include research undertaken regarding the accommodation options close to the chosen campus, potential suburbs.

d. Awareness about the chosen course – the applicant should be able to demonstrate knowledge about the course, total duration, number of units/subjects, number of core/elective units, learning outcomes and internship element, if applicable. Information on how the course will benefit the applicant in future career growth.

4. Applicant’s current circumstances onshore in Australia

a. If on a student visa and has any unexplained gaps in the study while onshore, explain gaps in study when applicant has not been studying in a compulsory term (usually semester/term 1 or 2 in an academic year) and provide relevant documentation to support the application. The University will not usually accept applicants with study gaps unless there is a very strong explanation.

b. If transferring providers within the first 6 calendar months, provide a strong justification for transferring providers onshore. The University will not accept applications from onshore applicants transferring providers within the first 6 calendar months of the principal course unless there are exceptional circumstances.

c. In the case of poor academic performance within their onshore studies, provide written explanation and relevant documentation explaining their poor performance and what measure they will take to ensure academic success at CQUniversity. The University will not usually accept applicants with poor academic records unless there is a very strong explanation and relevant documentation provided.

d. Understanding of obligations of the applicant under the higher education student visa subclass 500, as outlined by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
