Project Description
Design, develop and document the process of creating clear and effective visual representations for a topic of your choice. You should create an interactive data visualization and/or a number of static data visualizations. The visualizations must be based on real data that you can acquire through a third-party publicly available data source.
Project Tasks
1. Select a publicly available data set (that have not been used in the HDSDA course previously)
2. Prepare/preprocess data appropriately
3. Design and create an interactive data visualization and/or static data visualizations o Use multiple visualizations techniques based on the objectives set for your project o Compare and constrast the different techniques applied
4. Present the work carried out via a report and/or on-line Process:
A. Acquire and understand the dataset o Identify a dataset(s)
B. Acquire access to dataset (Download or Cloud access)
C. Inspect the data – Identify features of interest
Determine key objectives
1. What do you wish to show with this project?? Identify key results in dataset
A. Preprocess the data o Data cleansing
B. Structure data to suit the representation method
2. Create visual representations o Identify and implement several techniques
A. Multiple variables (>2) to be identified Project Deliverables
You are required to:
1. Create interactive data visualization and/or a number of static data visualizations of a chosen dataset
2. Write a report which includes and documents all the visual representations you created for this project. The report should include the following:
Short background on data source selected, including basic domain information (10%)
1. Specification of what do you wish your project to show, i.e. what are the main objectives, what is the narrative conveyed? (15%)
2. Outline the visual design process from beginning to end – analysis of data, data preprocessing, how you developed your data visualizations
3. Justification of techniques, layout, style, and colour used for each visualisation
4. Presentation and discussion of the results shown by each visualization
5. Conclusions including findings/interpretations – a short reflection on developing this project e.g. what you found easy/difficult
