Study - Is weekly exercise time associated with higher energy intake?
This study utilizes the provided data from a cross-sectional study to determine the effect of exercise on an individual’s energy intake. The data has been divided into 4 groups according to exercise per week – daily; once per week; 1-3 times per week; 4-6 times per week – and compared to energy intake values. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used in SPSS software to conduct data analysis and determine whether a relationship exists between exercise and energy intake.

To prevent errors in results, data cleaning of the SPSS dataset was undertaken. Data was checked and corrected for nominal, scale or ordinal measures All variables were adjusted for decimal places and nominal values added as per data dictionary and questionnaire where applicable. A spell- check was completed, and errors corrected. Height in metres squared variable was computed to further allow BMI variable to be added. BMI nominal and scale measure categories were then computed using weight kg and height in metres squared.
Variables pertaining to the study were checked column by column for errors. Negative numerical signs were removed and dealt with simply as data input error. Two errors in height for ID numbers 49 and 55 were noted. Weight variables appeared believable. Energy intake was high in ID 49 at 18389kj and ID 55 at 18070.14kJ/day. It was decided that both ID 49 and 55 would not be included in any analysis as their data contained flaws in height, energy intake, macro/ micronutrient intake and exercise variables, that could possibly influence analysis and could not be trusted. Exercise variables were checked against category values. Several inconsistencies of incorrect values data of 0, 6 and 7 were noted for ID’s 8, 25 and 49, whilst missing data for ID’s 48 and 79. ID’s 6 and 58 had inconsistent anthropometry measurements. It was also decided that the missing data for energy and exercise variables that could not be verified for ID’s 6, 8, 25, 48, 58 and 79, would not be included in analysis to further corrupt any results. This left a core group of 79 subjects. Any further missing or incorrect data would not affect analysis of study.
Descriptive frequency statistics for categorical variables (Appendix A), descriptive statistical analysis for continuous variables (Appendix B), and descriptive explore analysis (Appendix C) were conducted to determine normality various features such as number, mean, standard deviation, interquartile ranges and percentages of study subjects in the demographic and anthropometry data, then reviewed. Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) (Appendix D) evidenced data is normally distributed and failure to reject the null hypothesis except for height whose p-value is questionable due to lower bound true significance with the data appearing normally distributed.
