You're listening to episode one of the literary review podcast and I'm your host Hoor Binsamno today I'll talk about an important subject about how Aschenputtel, the brothers Grimm version of Cinderella conveys stereotypical values about gender. Aschenputtel conveys stereotypical values about gender to its audience.
It is quite obvious that the story Aschenputtel embodies stereotypes about women. Through analyzing the story stereotypical messages about women have been spotted. For example, here is a quote from the story “there she had to do hard work from morning till night, get up before daybreak, carry water, light fires, cook and clean” this makes us women feel that we are expected to cook, clean, do house chores, staying in and nothing else. If this isn't proof of stereotyped gender messages about women I don't know what is since years ago women were looked at in this way that was supposed to do all of that and period, like were not capable of anything else. And here is another quote backing my point “wept” this word the word wept is repeated several times as if they're trying to point out that women are emotionally unstable and would cry about anything. “Dear child be good and pious and then the god will always protect you” that's a quote a dying mother gave to her daughter she didn't tell her to always be happy or that she loves her nooo she just told her daughter to behave and if she didn't she wouldn't be protected this is written by a man and it is a stereotyped message because men expect women to behave all of the time and they expect all women to be obedient.
Since the 19th century or maybe even before that it was a standard thing for a man to look at a female in this way as delicate and fragile and has no place in the real world other than staying in. Another gender-stereotyped message in the story is about men.
In other words, these messages are hidden within the text and are written as if it's normalized For Instance “so he bought” the father was responsible for buying things and handling things on the outside he's responsible for dealing with real-life this conveys stereotyped messages because men are looked at as capable and tough and can travel, handle what's out there and get things done. The quote “king gave orders' ' is a stereotypical gender quote because to be able to give orders and make important arrangements you must be a man. women didn't give important orders and their jobs were to mind their own business.
Another evidence is the prince approached her and took her by the hand and danced with her:” Cinderella didn't approach him. The prince approached her to talk to her. Women were inclined to feel powerless helpless and she must be obedient and didn't say no to them. He just took her and danced well so maybe she doesn't want to but she is forced.
The similarity that is found in all those stereotyped messages is that the men always were in control, in control of the situation, and control of the Woman because they were the ones in charge. In my opinion, Aschenputtel is written with stereotypical messages about the importance of appearance. The story spoke about how important appearance is several times without actually saying the words but is the meaning and I'll get more in-depth so there is more than one quote that out. The first quote you cannot go with us for you have no clothes and cannot dance we should be ashamed of you a mother is being ashamed because of the appearance and that she can't dance they only take pride in appearances and how they look
The second quote is astonished at her beauty; this tells us that if she wasn't beautiful then they wouldn't have even noticed her. “beautiful dress” “pretty feet“ ``golden slippers” are repeated a lot through the story “pearls and jewels” this is what was considered beautiful just appearances. We can therefore see how cliche the importance of appearance is.
Together these points and evidence show how gender whether you are a male or female will affect your entire life and decisions and limits to what you're capable of.
