1. Introduction
Most engineers use strain gauges in their work and study. Structural engineers use them to find strain in the supports of buildings and bridges under load. Mechanical and aerospace engineers use themto find strain in machine parts and different shapes under pressure or load. They can also be part of a load cell or torque sensor (a transducer) to directly measure force, pressure or position. The Strain Gauge Trainer (SM1009) in Figure 1 shows students how popular strain gauges work and how to use them correctly. It shows them how to measure strain in different ways and compare displayed strain with theoretical strain for different materials and structures.
It is a complete piece of equipment with a set of common strain gauge arrangements and structural mechanisms. A digital strain display shows the voltage output from the strain bridge circuits and automatically calculates and shows strain. It shows strain in the commonly accepted reading of microstrain (με).
