Those states have been reported to utilize more resources and thus, produce higher quantities of waste per person. In a reported study of Canada, it was observed that environmental pollution also varies with changing income levels (Merkulova et al., 2018). The pursuit for sustainability in regards to construction has been powered by the perception that the industry would improvise its impacts over the environment as well as build economic gains simultaneously. Osmani et al. (2008) also reported that environmental protection is considered as a chief driver to manage construction and demolition waste. Recently, an effective approach i.e. DEMATEL to depict causal relationship have been reported to analyse the critical factors and barriers in construction and demolition waste management (Chauhan et al., 2018; Qi et al., 2020).
It is really important for the construction industries to take the responsibility of the effects or impacts that their activities can pose on the outside environment in pursuit of their own interests (Loosemore& Lim, 2017). In order to attain this, it is the duty of the construction enterprises to accept CSR i.e. corporate social responsibility (a voluntary initiative by an entity to showcase its ethical contribution towards improving the life quality of the community and its employees (Xia et al., 2018; Xie et al., 2020). In view of the impacts of construction activities over the society, construction companies are required to be conscious of the need to satisfy the necessities of CSR and also contribute towards the execution of sustainable construction (Zhang et al., 2019). It has therefore led to a fact that by narrowing the CSR potentials to only environmental sustainability is most likely to be only a temporary solution to such a escalating problem. It must be very clear that continuous improvement and monitoring of process is required at each stage of construction to attain zero carbon emissions. Hence, a strategic process of management is need of an hour to redesign the entire chain, cross-sector alliances, educating end users about green practices, integration of stakeholders and monitoring of non-technical influences of zero-emission targets.
Although several studies have already made positive contributions towards sustainable construction/demolition waste management, industries have a lengthy road to go as far as sustainable management of waste is concerned. This definitely requires new approaches/techniques to be adopted by the construction firms which have more potential to obtain better results. As a result, more research is required on the development of project strategies to attain zero carbon emissions in construction industries.
Aim:By keeping aforementioned challenges in mind, the present research proposal aims to build an effective evaluation model integrating CSR practices with an improved fuzzy DEMATEL approach to attain the environmental sustainability in construction industry and to analyse its impact towards enhancement of Landsec’s competitiveness.
Objectives:
To examine the eco-efficiency of fuzzy DEMATEL approach towards sustainable enhancement of organisational performance and to determine multi-level and causal relationships.
To identify/analysethe CSR statements in relation tothe other construction industries and determinethe gaps in their project strategies.
To analyse theadequate metrics to potentially measure the DEMATEL components of the sustainability.
