Part 1: Client (proposal)
You are working for a global design company. Unfortunately, the company does not have any in?house analysis expertise. Your supervisor asks your project team to create a 1 -2 page proposal document to be sent out to a consultancy firm. The consultancy firm will provide detailed structural analysis of one of your company’s designs.
The consultancy firm requires the following in the proposal document:
1. Description of the 3D structure
2. CAD model of the structure (presented as a figure in the proposal and to be made available via a STP or IGES file)
3. Complete description of all loads, boundary conditions and constraints
4. Description of the client’s needs regarding the structural analysis (e.g. when will the structure fail and/or resonate?)
5. All required material properties.
Structure for analysis
Your project team can select any structure to analyse providing it satisfies the following constraints:
1. Finite element mesh must contain at least one of truss and beam elements (can be both)
2. Finite element mesh must contain at least one of shell and 3D solid elements (can be both)
3. The structure must have at least one complex boundary condition or constraint
Part 2: Consultancy firm (analysis of the structure)
Working in an engineering design consultancy, your supervisor asks your project team to run a static stress-displacement (*STATIC) and normal modes of vibration (*FREQUENCY) analysis on a 3D structure provided by a client.
Using the proposal document provided by the client (see Part 1), you must do the following:
1. Import the provided geometry into ABAQUS
2. Set up the model for finite element analysis (Part, Property, Assembly, Step, Interaction, Loads, Mesh etc.)
3. Run a static analysis
4. Run a frequency analysis
5. Perform mesh quality and convergence studies for each analysis
6. Analyse the results based on the client’s needs
