SCENARIO: Student nurses can be exposed to stressful clinical environments and challenging encounters. During your first week in your first clinical practice placement, you and your practice supervisor take the handover for a late shift. You are allocated a patient who is with you for observation. Your practice supervisor tells you that they have looked after this patient before and that they have found it difficult to provide care as the patient and the family member who is with them are often rude and argumentative. When the patient's call bell rings, your practice supervisor asks you to go and see what they want. On entering the room, the family member demands to know why they haven't seen the Physiotherapist yet and why it has taken you so long to answer the bell. You start to apologise but the family member interrupts, raising their voice and insisting that you get the Physiotherapist. You speak with your practice supervisor who tells you that it will be some time before the Physiotherapist gets to this patient today. You know you need to go back and let the patient and their family know, but now feel anxious and reluctant about returning to face them again.
